두 함수 $f(x,y)=\dfrac{\sin(x^2+y^2)}{x^2+y^2}$ 와 $g(x,y)=\dfrac{x^2-y^2}{x^2+y^2}$ 가 $(x,y)\to(0,0)$일 때, 즉 점 $(x,y)$가 원점에 가까워질 때 어떻게 움직이는지 비교해 보자.

Compare the behavior of the two functions
as $x$ and $y$ both tend to $0$, that is, as the point $(x,y)$ approaches the origin. Neither function is defined at the origin, so the tables below record values at nearby points only, rounded to three decimal places.

Reading either table toward its centre, the values of $f$ crowd around $1$, while the values of $g$ settle on no single number at all: they stay near $1$ along one axis and near $-1$ along the other. Both numerical guesses are in fact correct, and the rest of the section proves them:
표기
은 직관적으로, $(x,y)$를 $(a,b)$에—단 $(a,b)$와 같지는 않게—충분히 가깝게 잡으면 $f(x,y)$를 원하는 만큼 $L$에 가깝게 만들 수 있다는 뜻이다.
이때 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}f(x,y)=L$이란, 모든 수 $\varepsilon\gt 0$에 대해 어떤 수 $\delta\gt 0$이 존재하여
Informally, the notation
says that $f(x,y)$ can be forced as close to $L$ as one likes by taking $(x,y)$ in the domain of $f$ close enough to $(a,b)$ — but never equal to $(a,b)$. Made precise:
Definition 1. Let $f$ be a function of two variables whose domain $D$ contains points arbitrarily close to $(a,b)$. Then $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}f(x,y)=L$ means: for every number $\varepsilon\gt 0$ there is a number $\delta\gt 0$ such that
The condition that $D$ contain points arbitrarily close to $(a,b)$ is what makes the definition non-vacuous; $(a,b)$ itself need not lie in $D$.
$|f(x,y)-L|$은 두 수 $f(x,y)$와 $L$ 사이의 거리이고, $\sqrt{(x-a)^2+(y-b)^2}$는 두 점 $(x,y)$와 $(a,b)$ 사이의 거리이다.
$f(D_\delta\setminus\{(a,b)\})\subset(L-\varepsilon,\,L+\varepsilon)$
Two other notations for the same statement are
Both quantities in Definition 1 are distances: $|f(x,y)-L|$ is the distance between the two numbers $f(x,y)$ and $L$, and $\sqrt{(x-a)^2+(y-b)^2}$ is the distance between the two points $(x,y)$ and $(a,b)$. So the definition says that the first distance can be made arbitrarily small by making the second one small enough — but not zero.
Read as an arrow diagram: given any interval $(L-\varepsilon,L+\varepsilon)$ around $L$, one can produce a disk $D_\delta$ with centre $(a,b)$ and radius $\delta\gt 0$ that $f$ maps into that interval,
$f(D_\delta\setminus\{(a,b)\})\subset(L-\varepsilon,\,L+\varepsilon)$
Read on the graph instead: let $S$ be the surface $z=f(x,y)$. Given $\varepsilon\gt 0$, one can choose $\delta\gt 0$ so that the part of $S$ lying above the punctured disk $D_\delta$ is trapped between the two horizontal planes $z=L-\varepsilon$ and $z=L+\varepsilon$.
두 편극한이 서로 다르면 $\lim_{x\to a}f(x)$는 존재하지 않는다.
For a function of one variable there are exactly two ways to approach $a$: from the left and from the right. If the two one-sided limits disagree, $\lim_{x\to a}f(x)$ fails to exist.
In two variables the situation is far less rigid. The point $(x,y)$ may approach $(a,b)$ from infinitely many directions and along infinitely many curves, in any manner whatsoever, as long as it stays inside the domain of $f$.
Definition 1 constrains only the distance from $(x,y)$ to $(a,b)$; it says nothing about the direction of approach. Consequently, if the limit exists, then $f(x,y)$ must tend to that same value $L$ along every possible approach. Contrapositively, exhibiting two approaches with different limiting values proves that the limit does not exist.
경로 $C_1$을 따라 $(x,y)\to(a,b)$일 때 $f(x,y)\to L_1$이고, 경로 $C_2$를 따라 $(x,y)\to(a,b)$일 때 $f(x,y)\to L_2$라 하자.
Two-Path Test. Suppose $f(x,y)\to L_1$ as $(x,y)\to(a,b)$ along a path $C_1$, and $f(x,y)\to L_2$ as $(x,y)\to(a,b)$ along a path $C_2$. If $L_1\ne L_2$, then
This is immediate from Definition 1: a limit, if it exists, is approached along every admissible path, so two paths with different limiting values rule one out. The test runs one way only: agreement along two paths — or even along an infinite family, such as every line through $(a,b)$ — proves nothing (see Example 3).
- 합의 극한은 극한의 합이다;
- 차의 극한은 극한의 차이다;
- 상수배는 극한을 그대로 통과한다;
- 곱의 극한은 극한의 곱이다;
The Limit Laws of Section 1.6 carry over verbatim to functions of two variables. Assuming the limits on the right exist:
- the limit of a sum is the sum of the limits;
- the limit of a difference is the difference of the limits;
- a constant factor passes through the limit;
- the limit of a product is the product of the limits;
- the limit of a quotient is the quotient of the limits, as long as the denominator's limit is not $0$.
Together with the laws one needs three special limits; proving these three is the task set by Exercise 54:
유리함수 $q=p/r$과 $q$의 정의역에 속하는 점 $(a,b)$(즉 $r(a,b)\ne 0$)에 대해
다항함수 $p(x,y)=\sum c_k x^{m_k}y^{n_k}$(유한합)의 각 항 $x^my^n$을 보자. $m+n\ge1$이면 곱 법칙을 $m+n-1$번 적용하고 특수 극한 $\lim x=a$, $\lim y=b$(식 (2))를 대입하여 $\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}x^my^n=a^mb^n$을 얻고, $m=n=0$인 상수항은 (2)의 $\lim c=c$가 곧바로 처리한다.
유리함수 $q=p/r$에 대해 $(a,b)$가 $q$의 정의역에 있다는 것은 $r(a,b)\ne0$을 뜻한다. (3)을 분자 $p$와 분모 $r$에 각각 적용하면 $\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}p(x,y)=p(a,b)$이고 $\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}r(x,y)=r(a,b)\ne0$이므로, 몫 법칙(분모의 극한이 $0$이 아닐 때 성립)을 적용할 수 있어
A polynomial function of two variables is a finite sum of terms $c\,x^m y^n$ with $c$ constant and $m,n$ nonnegative integers; a rational function is a quotient of two such polynomials. For instance $p(x,y)=x^4+5x^3y^2+6xy^4-7y+6$ is a polynomial and $q(x,y)=\dfrac{2xy+1}{x^2+y^2}$ is a rational function.
For every polynomial $p$ of two variables,
For a rational function $q=p/r$ and a point $(a,b)$ in the domain of $q$ (that is, $r(a,b)\ne 0$),
In short: for these two classes of functions the limit is computed by direct substitution.
Proof. Take a term $x^my^n$ of the polynomial $p(x,y)=\sum c_k x^{m_k}y^{n_k}$ (a finite sum). If $m+n\ge1$, applying the product law $m+n-1$ times and substituting the special limits $\lim x=a$, $\lim y=b$ from (2) gives $\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}x^my^n=a^mb^n$; a constant term ($m=n=0$) is settled at once by $\lim c=c$ in (2). Multiplying by the constant-factor law and then applying the sum law across the finitely many terms gives
which is (3).
For a rational function $q=p/r$, the hypothesis that $(a,b)$ lies in the domain of $q$ means $r(a,b)\ne0$. Applying (3) to the numerator and denominator separately gives $\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}p(x,y)=p(a,b)$ and $\lim_{(x,y)\to(a,b)}r(x,y)=r(a,b)\ne0$, so the quotient law (valid whenever the limit of the denominator is nonzero) applies and yields
which is (4).
The Squeeze Theorem carries over unchanged to two or more variables: if $u\le f\le v$ near $(a,b)$ and $u,v$ share the limit $L$ there, then $f\to L$ as well. It is the standard tool for confirming a limit whose value has already been guessed.
The estimate used in Example 6 illustrates the technique. Since $y^2\ge 0$ gives $x^2\le x^2+y^2$, hence $x^2/(x^2+y^2)\le 1$,
The right-hand bound depends only on the distance from $(x,y)$ to the origin, which is exactly what Definition 1 controls.
일변수함수에서 연속함수의 극한은 직접대입으로 계산되는데, 이는 대입 성질 $\lim_{x\to a}f(x)=f(a)$ 자체가 연속의 정의이기 때문이다.
For one variable, limits of continuous functions are evaluated by direct substitution, because that substitution property $\lim_{x\to a}f(x)=f(a)$ is precisely what continuity means. Two-variable continuity is defined the same way.
Definition 6. A function $f$ of two variables is continuous at $(a,b)$ if
$f$ is continuous on $D$ if it is continuous at every point $(a,b)$ of $D$.
The equation packs three demands into one: $f(a,b)$ is defined, the limit exists, and the two numbers agree.
Intuitively, continuity says that a small change in the point $(x,y)$ produces only a small change in the value $f(x,y)$; the surface $z=f(x,y)$ then has no hole and no break in it.
Three consequences make continuous functions easy to recognize.
(a) Equation (3) evaluates the limit of a polynomial by substitution, so every polynomial is continuous on all of $\mathbb{R}^2$.
(b) Equation (4) does the same for a rational function at every point of its domain, so every rational function is continuous on its domain.
(c) By the Limit Laws, adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing two continuous functions again produces a function continuous on the resulting domain — for a quotient, wherever the denominator stays nonzero.
Composition is a fourth way of manufacturing continuous functions. Let $f$ be a continuous function of two variables and let $g$ be a continuous function of one variable defined on the range of $f$. Then the composite $h=g\circ f$ given by
is continuous as well. The text states this without proof; Examples 10 and 11 apply it to $g(t)=e^{-t}$ and $g(t)=\arctan t$.
$\lim_{(x,y,z)\to(a,b,c)}f(x,y,z)=L$이란, 점 $(x,y,z)$가 $f$의 정의역 안에서 $(a,b,c)$에 접근할 때 $f$가 $L$에 접근한다는 뜻이다.
$(a,b,c)$에서의 연속 역시 $\lim_{(x,y,z)\to(a,b,c)}f(x,y,z)=f(a,b,c)$로 정의된다.
Everything in this section extends to three or more variables. The statement $\lim_{(x,y,z)\to(a,b,c)}f(x,y,z)=L$ means that $f$ approaches $L$ as the point $(x,y,z)$ approaches $(a,b,c)$ inside the domain of $f$, and since the distance in $\mathbb{R}^3$ is $\sqrt{(x-a)^2+(y-b)^2+(z-c)^2}$, the precise version reads: for every $\varepsilon\gt 0$ there is $\delta\gt 0$ with
for every $(x,y,z)$ in the domain of $f$. Continuity at $(a,b,c)$ again means $\lim_{(x,y,z)\to(a,b,c)}f(x,y,z)=f(a,b,c)$.
For example, $f(x,y,z)=\dfrac{1}{x^2+y^2+z^2-1}$ is a rational function of three variables, hence continuous at every point of $\mathbb{R}^3$ where its denominator does not vanish; its only discontinuities lie on the unit sphere $x^2+y^2+z^2=1$.
이때 $\displaystyle\lim_{\mathbf{x}\to\mathbf{a}}f(\mathbf{x})=L$이란, 모든 $\varepsilon\gt 0$에 대해 어떤 $\delta\gt 0$이 존재하여
$n=1$이면 $\mathbf{x}=x$, $\mathbf{a}=a$이므로 (7)은 일변수 정의가 된다. $n=2$이면 $\mathbf{x}=\langle x,y\rangle$, $\mathbf{a}=\langle a,b\rangle$이므로 $|\mathbf{x}-\mathbf{a}|=\sqrt{(x-a)^2+(y-b)^2}$이고 (7)은 정의 1이 된다.
연속 역시 모든 차원에서 하나의 간결한 형태를 갖는다: $f$가 $\mathbf{a}$에서 연속이라 함은 $\lim_{\mathbf{x}\to\mathbf{a}}f(\mathbf{x})=f(\mathbf{a})$인 것이다.
Vector notation collapses the two-variable and three-variable definitions into a single one.
Definition (7). Let $f$ be defined on a subset $D$ of $\mathbb{R}^n$. Then $\displaystyle\lim_{\mathbf{x}\to\mathbf{a}}f(\mathbf{x})=L$ means: for every $\varepsilon\gt 0$ there is $\delta\gt 0$ such that
The three cases already met are the special cases $n=1,2,3$. For $n=1$ one has $\mathbf{x}=x$, $\mathbf{a}=a$ and (7) is the one-variable definition. For $n=2$, $\mathbf{x}=\langle x,y\rangle$ and $\mathbf{a}=\langle a,b\rangle$, so $|\mathbf{x}-\mathbf{a}|=\sqrt{(x-a)^2+(y-b)^2}$ and (7) becomes Definition 1. For $n=3$ it becomes the three-variable definition above.
Continuity likewise has one compact form in every dimension: $f$ is continuous at $\mathbf{a}$ if $\lim_{\mathbf{x}\to\mathbf{a}}f(\mathbf{x})=f(\mathbf{a})$.

Show that $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{x^2-y^2}{x^2+y^2}$ does not exist, by comparing the values of the function along the two coordinate axes.
Proof. Along the $x$-axis ($y=0$, $x\ne0$), $f(x,0)=\dfrac{x^2-0}{x^2+0}=1$, so $f(x,0)\to1$. Along the $y$-axis ($x=0$, $y\ne0$), $f(0,y)=\dfrac{0-y^2}{0+y^2}=-1$, so $f(0,y)\to-1$. Both axes are paths through the origin, and the two limiting values $1\ne-1$ disagree, so by the Two-Path Test, $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{x^2-y^2}{x^2+y^2}$ does not exist.
$f(x,y)=\dfrac{xy}{x^2+y^2}$ 에 대하여 극한 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}f(x,y)$ 가 존재하는지 판정하라.
그러나 직선 $y=x$ ($x\ne0$)를 따르면 $f(x,x)=\dfrac{x\cdot x}{x^2+x^2}=\dfrac{x^2}{2x^2}=\dfrac12$이므로 $f(x,x)\to\dfrac12$이다.
Decide whether $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{xy}{x^2+y^2}$ exists. Compute the limit along each coordinate axis and along the line $y=x$, and use those values to justify the conclusion.
Proof. Along either coordinate axis, $f(x,0)=\dfrac{0}{x^2}=0$ and $f(0,y)=\dfrac{0}{y^2}=0$, so $f\to0$ regardless of which axis is used. Along the line $y=x$ ($x\ne0$), however, $f(x,x)=\dfrac{x\cdot x}{x^2+x^2}=\dfrac{x^2}{2x^2}=\dfrac12$, so $f(x,x)\to\dfrac12$. Since the axis limit $0$ and the limit $\dfrac12$ along $y=x$ disagree, the Two-Path Test shows $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{xy}{x^2+y^2}$ does not exist.
$f(x,y)=\dfrac{xy^2}{x^2+y^4}$ 에 대하여 극한 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}f(x,y)$ 가 존재하는지 판정하라.
그러나 포물선 $x=y^2$ ($y\ne0$)을 따르면 $f(y^2,y)=\dfrac{y^2\cdot y^2}{(y^2)^2+y^4}=\dfrac{y^4}{2y^4}=\dfrac12$이므로 $f(y^2,y)\to\dfrac12$이다.
Decide whether $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{xy^2}{x^2+y^4}$ exists. First find the limit along every line through the origin; then show that this evidence settles nothing by computing the limit along the parabola $x=y^2$.
Proof. Along a line $y=mx$ through the origin ($m$ constant), $f(x,mx)=\dfrac{x(mx)^2}{x^2+(mx)^4}=\dfrac{m^2x^3}{x^2+m^4x^4}=\dfrac{m^2x}{1+m^4x^2}$, and as $x\to0$ the numerator tends to $0$ while the denominator tends to $1$, so $f(x,mx)\to0$. Along the $y$-axis ($x=0$), $f(0,y)=0$ as well. So the limit along every line through the origin equals $0$.
Along the parabola $x=y^2$ ($y\ne0$), however, $f(y^2,y)=\dfrac{y^2\cdot y^2}{(y^2)^2+y^4}=\dfrac{y^4}{2y^4}=\dfrac12$, so $f(y^2,y)\to\dfrac12$. This disagrees with the common value $0$ along lines, so by the Two-Path Test $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{xy^2}{x^2+y^4}$ does not exist — agreement along every line through the origin does not guarantee that the limit exists.
극한 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(1,2)}\left(x^2y^3-x^3y^2+3x+2y\right)$ 의 값을 구하라.
따라서 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(1,2)}\left(x^2y^3-x^3y^2+3x+2y\right)=11$이다.
Evaluate $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(1,2)}\left(x^2y^3-x^3y^2+3x+2y\right)$.
Solution. Since $p(x,y)=x^2y^3-x^3y^2+3x+2y$ is a polynomial, (3) allows the limit to be evaluated by substituting $(1,2)$ directly.
Hence $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(1,2)}\left(x^2y^3-x^3y^2+3x+2y\right)=11$.
따라서 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(-2,3)}\frac{x^2y+1}{x^3y^2-2x}=-\frac{13}{68}$이다.
Decide whether $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(-2,3)}\frac{x^2y+1}{x^3y^2-2x}$ exists, and evaluate it if it does.
Solution. For $q(x,y)=\dfrac{x^2y+1}{x^3y^2-2x}$, the denominator $r(x,y)=x^3y^2-2x$ satisfies $r(-2,3)=(-2)^3\cdot3^2-2(-2)=-72+4=-68\ne0$ at $(-2,3)$, so $(-2,3)$ lies in the domain of $q$. Hence (4) allows the limit to be evaluated by direct substitution.
Hence $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(-2,3)}\frac{x^2y+1}{x^3y^2-2x}=-\frac{13}{68}$.
극한 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{3x^2y}{x^2+y^2}$ 가 존재하면 그 값을 구하라.
$\delta=\varepsilon/3$로 잡는다.
따라서 두 방법 모두 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{3x^2y}{x^2+y^2}=0$을 준다.
Find $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{3x^2y}{x^2+y^2}$ if it exists, in two ways.
(a) Directly from the $\varepsilon$-$\delta$ statement of Definition 1.
(b) From inequality (5) together with the Squeeze Theorem.
Solution. Both methods show the limit equals $0$.
(a) Let $\varepsilon\gt0$ be given, and set $\delta=\varepsilon/3$. If $0\lt\sqrt{x^2+y^2}\lt\delta$, then $x^2\le x^2+y^2$ gives $x^2/(x^2+y^2)\le1$, so
This is precisely the implication Definition 1 demands, so the limit is $0$.
(b) Since $x^2/(x^2+y^2)\le1$, the bound $-3|y|\le\dfrac{3x^2y}{x^2+y^2}\le3|y|$ holds for every $(x,y)\ne(0,0)$; this is the first estimate of inequality (5) written without absolute values. As $(x,y)\to(0,0)$, $|y|\to0$, so both bounds tend to $0$, and the Squeeze Theorem forces the middle expression to tend to $0$ as well.
Both methods therefore give $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{3x^2y}{x^2+y^2}=0$.
Determine the set of points at which $f(x,y)=\dfrac{x^2-y^2}{x^2+y^2}$ is continuous.
Solution. The function $f(x,y)=\dfrac{x^2-y^2}{x^2+y^2}$ is rational, so by (4) it is continuous throughout its domain, namely wherever the denominator is nonzero. Since $x^2+y^2=0$ only at $x=y=0$, the origin is the sole point where the denominator vanishes. Hence $f$ is continuous on the set
and since $f$ is not even defined at the origin, that point counts as a point of discontinuity.
그러나 예제 1에서 이미 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{x^2-y^2}{x^2+y^2}$가 존재하지 않음을 보였고, $(x,y)\ne(0,0)$에서 $g$는 그 유리함수와 같으므로 $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}g(x,y)$도 존재하지 않는다.
Let
Decide whether $g$ is continuous at the origin, and say why.
Solution. The value $g(0,0)=0$ is defined, so the first requirement of Definition 6 (that $g(0,0)$ exist) is met. But Example 1 already showed that $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{x^2-y^2}{x^2+y^2}$ fails to exist, and since $g$ agrees with that rational function for $(x,y)\ne(0,0)$, $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}g(x,y)$ fails to exist as well. With no limit to speak of, the equality $\lim g=g(0,0)$ required by Definition 6 cannot hold. So $g$ is discontinuous at the origin.
Let
Determine the set of points at which $f$ is continuous, using the value of the limit found in Example 6 to settle the origin.
Solution. Away from the origin, $f$ coincides with the rational function $\dfrac{3x^2y}{x^2+y^2}$, whose denominator is nonzero there, so (4) makes $f$ continuous at every such point. At the origin, Example 6 already showed $\displaystyle\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}\frac{3x^2y}{x^2+y^2}=0$, which matches the defined value $f(0,0)=0$; thus the equality $\lim_{(x,y)\to(0,0)}f(x,y)=f(0,0)$ required by Definition 6 holds, and $f$ is continuous there too. Combining both cases, $f$ is continuous on all of $\mathbb{R}^2$.
Determine where $h(x,y)=e^{-(x^2+y^2)}$ is continuous, justifying the answer by the continuity of composites.
Solution. The function $f(x,y)=x^2+y^2$ is a polynomial, hence continuous on all of $\mathbb{R}^2$, and $g(t)=e^{-t}$ is continuous for every real $t$. Since $h(x,y)=e^{-(x^2+y^2)}=g(f(x,y))$, $h$ is the composite $g\circ f$, and the continuity of composites shows $h$ is continuous wherever $f$ is. Hence $h$ is continuous on all of $\mathbb{R}^2$.
Determine where $h(x,y)=\arctan(y/x)$ is continuous, and describe the set of points at which it fails to be continuous.
Solution. The function $f(x,y)=y/x$ is rational, so it is continuous wherever the denominator is nonzero, that is, on $\{(x,y)\mid x\ne0\}$, and $g(t)=\arctan t$ is continuous for every real $t$. Since $h(x,y)=\arctan(y/x)=g(f(x,y))$ is the composite $g\circ f$, continuity of composites makes $h$ continuous on that same region $\{(x,y)\mid x\ne0\}$. As $h$ is not even defined where $x=0$, its points of discontinuity form exactly the line $x=0$ (the $y$-axis).
