$[a,b]$를 $a \lt b$인 닫힌 구간이라 하자.
$f$를 $[a,b]$ 위의 실숫값 유계함수, $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$을 $[a,b]$의 분할이라 하자. 각 $i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$에 대해 다음과 같이 둔다.

여기서 $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$와 $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$를 각각 $[a,b]$에서 $f$의 상리만적분과 하리만적분이라 부른다.
Let $[a,b]$ be a closed interval with $a \lt b$. A partition $P$ of $[a,b]$ is a finite set of points $x_0$, $x_1$, $\ldots$, $x_n$ such that
We write
Let $f$ be a real-valued bounded function on $[a,b]$ and $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ be a partition of $[a,b]$. For each $i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$, we put
and
We say that $U(P,f)$ is an upper sum of $f$ over $P$ and $L(P,f)$ is a lower sum of $f$ over $P$. Obviously,
Finally, we define
and
where the inf and the sup are taken over all partitions $P$ of $[a,b]$, i.e.
and
Here $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$ are called the upper Riemann integral of $f$ on $[a,b]$ and the lower Riemann integral of $f$ on $[a,b]$, respectively. Moreover, obviously for any partition $P$ of $[a,b]$,
and
Let $f$ be a real-valued bounded function on $[a,b]$, i.e. there exists a positive constant $M > 0$ such that
Then obviously $f$ is bounded above and bounded below. Thus for all real-valued bounded function $f$ and a partition $P$ of $[a,b]$, $U(P,f)$ and $L(P,f)$ are well-defined, i.e. $U(P,f)$ and $L(P,f)$ exist in $\mathbb{R}$. More precisely,
Therefore $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$ exist in $\mathbb{R}$ as well.
$P_0 = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$을 $[a,b]$의 분할, $P_1 = \{y_0, \ldots, y_m\}$을 $[a,b]$의 또 다른 분할이라 하자. 그러면 $a = x_0 \le x_1 \le \cdots \le x_n = b$이고 $a = y_0 \le y_1 \le \cdots \le y_m = b$이다.
Let $P_0 = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ be a partition of $[a,b]$ and $P_1 = \{y_0, \ldots, y_m\}$ be an another partition of $[a,b]$. Then $a = x_0 \le x_1 \le \cdots \le x_n = b$ and $a = y_0 \le y_1 \le \cdots \le y_m = b$. Consider the set
Since $P_0 \cup P_1$ is a finite set, we can compare the order of all elements of $P_0 \cup P_1$. Thus we can rearrange the elements of $P_0 \cup P_1$ so that
and
Therefore we can consider $P_0 \cup P_1$ as a partition of $[a,b]$. Moreover,
and
Two inequalities (2.1) and (2.2) seem to be clear intuitively and a rigorous proof of these two inequalities will be given later.
Let $f$ be a real-valued function on $[a,b]$. Assume that $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$ exist in $\mathbb{R}$. Then
Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since
where inf is taken over all partitions of $[a,b]$, there exists a partition $P_0$ such that
Similarly, since
there exists a partition $P_1$ such that
Moreover,
Therefore, combining (2.3), (2.4), and (2.5), we have
Since $\varepsilon > 0$ is an arbitrary positive constant, we finally obtain
$f$를 $[a,b]$ 위의 실숫값 함수, $P$를 $[a,b]$의 분할이라 하자. $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$와 $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$가 $\mathbb{R}$에 존재한다고 가정하자. 그러면
Let $f$ be a real-valued function on $[a,b]$ and $P$ be a partition of $[a,b]$. Assume that $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$ exist in $\mathbb{R}$. Then
Let $f$ be a real-valued function on $[a,b]$. We say that $f$ is Riemann-integrable on $[a,b]$ iff both $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$ exist in $\mathbb{R}$ and
For any Riemann-integrable function $f$ on $[a,b]$, we write
Define
and let $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ be a partition of $[a,b]$. Then
and
Therefore $f$ is not Riemann-integrable even though $f$ is bounded.
Define
and let $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ be a partition of $[0,1]$. Then there exist a $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that
Thus
and it implies that $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ does not exist in $\mathbb{R}$. However, $f$ is Riemann-integrable on $[\delta, 1+\delta]$ for any $\delta > 0$. Fix $\delta > 0$ to show this statement. For each $n \in \mathbb{N}$, define
Then $P_n$ is a partition of $[\delta, 1+\delta]$. Observe that for each $n$,
and
Thus
Moreover, due to (2.6), we have
for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. Finally taking $n \to \infty$ in the above inequality, we have
and thus $f$ is Riemann-integrable on $[\delta, 1+\delta]$.
$k \in \mathbb{N}$을 $k \ge 1/\sqrt{x_{i_0}}$를 만족하도록 잡으면 $0 \lt 1/k^2 \le x_{i_0}$이므로 $1/k^2 \in [0, x_{i_0}]$이고
Define
Prove or disprove that $f$ is Riemann integrable on $[0,1]$.
Let $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ be an arbitrary partition of $[0,1]$. As in Example 2.8, since $x_0 = 0$ and $x_n = 1 > 0$, there exists $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that
Since $P$ is a partition of $[0,1]$, $x_{i_0-1} \ge x_0 = 0$, and hence $x_{i_0-1} = 0$. Thus $[x_{i_0-1}, x_{i_0}] = [0, x_{i_0}]$ and $\Delta x_{i_0} = x_{i_0} > 0$.
We show that $M_{i_0} = \sup_{0 \le x \le x_{i_0}} f(x) = \infty$. Choose $k \in \mathbb{N}$ with $k \ge 1/\sqrt{x_{i_0}}$. Then $0 \lt 1/k^2 \le x_{i_0}$, so $1/k^2 \in [0, x_{i_0}]$ and
Thus $M_{i_0} \ge k$ for every such $k$, and letting $k \to \infty$ gives $M_{i_0} = \infty$.
Since $f \ge 0$, we have $M_i \ge 0$ for all $i$, and hence
Since this holds for every partition $P$ of $[0,1]$,
i.e. $\overline{\int_0^1} f dx$ does not exist in $\mathbb{R}$. By Definition 2.6, Riemann-integrability requires both $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$ to exist in $\mathbb{R}$, so $f$ is not Riemann-integrable on $[0,1]$.
먼저 이는 $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 위로 유계가 아니거나 아래로 유계가 아님을 뜻함을 관찰하자. 만약 $f$가 위로도 유계이고 아래로도 유계라면, 즉 어떤 $M_1, M_2 \in \mathbb{R}$에 대해 모든 $x \in [a,b]$에서 $f(x) \le M_1$이고 $f(x) \ge M_2$라면, $M := \max\{|M_1|,|M_2|\} + 1 > 0$으로 두었을 때 모든 $x \in [a,b]$에 대해 $|f(x)| \lt M$이 성립하여 가정에 모순이다.
$$M_{i_0} := \sup_{x_{i_0-1} \le x \le x_{i_0}} f(x) = \infty.$$
그렇지 않다고, 즉 모든 $i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$에 대해 $M_i \lt \infty$라고 가정하자. $M := \max\{M_1, \ldots, M_n\}$은 유한한 실수이다. $[a,b] = \bigcup_{i=1}^{n} [x_{i-1}, x_i]$이므로 임의의 $x \in [a,b]$에 대해 $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$인 $i$가 존재하고, 따라서 $f(x) \le M_i \le M$이다. 이는 $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 $M$으로 위로 유계임을 뜻하며, 가정에 모순이다. 따라서 어떤 $i_0$에 대해 $M_{i_0} = \infty$이다.
$$U(P,f) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta x_i \ge M_{i_0} \Delta x_{i_0} = \infty.$$이는 $[a,b]$의 임의의 분할 $P$에 대해 성립하므로
$$\overline{\int_a^b} f dx := \inf U(P,f) = \infty,$$즉 $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$는 $\mathbb{R}$에 존재하지 않는다. 정의 2.6에 의해 $f$는 $[a,b]$에서 리만 적분가능하지 않다.
- (경우 2) $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 아래로 유계가 아닌 경우. (경우 1)과 대칭적인 논증을 사용한다. $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$을 $[a,b]$의 임의의 분할이라 하자. 모든 $i$에 대해 $m_i > -\infty$라면 $m := \min\{m_1, \ldots, m_n\}$이 유한한 실수이고, 위와 같은 이유로 $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 $m$으로 아래로 유계가 되어 가정에 모순이다. 따라서 다음을 만족하는 $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$이 존재한다.
$$m_{i_0} := \inf_{x_{i_0-1} \le x \le x_{i_0}} f(x) = -\infty.$$
$$L(P,f) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i \Delta x_i \le m_{i_0} \Delta x_{i_0} = -\infty.$$이는 $[a,b]$의 임의의 분할 $P$에 대해 성립하므로
$$\underline{\int_a^b} f dx := \sup L(P,f) = -\infty,$$즉 $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$는 $\mathbb{R}$에 존재하지 않는다. 정의 2.6에 의해 $f$는 $[a,b]$에서 리만 적분가능하지 않다.
두 경우 모두 $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 리만 적분가능하지 않으므로, $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 유계가 아니면 $f$는 $[a,b]$에서 리만 적분가능하지 않다.
Let $f$ be a real-valued function on $[a,b]$. Assume that $f$ is unbounded on $[a,b]$, i.e. there is no $M > 0$ such that
Show that $f$ is not Riemann-integrable on $[a,b]$.
Assume that $f$ is unbounded on $[a,b]$, i.e. there is no $M > 0$ such that
First observe that this means $f$ is not bounded above on $[a,b]$ or not bounded below on $[a,b]$. Indeed, if $f$ were both bounded above and bounded below, i.e. $f(x) \le M_1$ and $f(x) \ge M_2$ for all $x \in [a,b]$ for some $M_1, M_2 \in \mathbb{R}$, then setting $M := \max\{|M_1|,|M_2|\} + 1 > 0$ would give $|f(x)| \lt M$ for all $x \in [a,b]$, contradicting the assumption.
- (Case 1) $f$ is not bounded above on $[a,b]$. Let $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$ be an arbitrary partition of $[a,b]$. We show that there exists $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that
$$M_{i_0} := \sup_{x_{i_0-1} \le x \le x_{i_0}} f(x) = \infty.$$
Suppose not, i.e. $M_i \lt \infty$ for all $i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$. Then $M := \max\{M_1, \ldots, M_n\}$ is a finite real number. Since $[a,b] = \bigcup_{i=1}^{n} [x_{i-1}, x_i]$, for any $x \in [a,b]$ there exists $i$ with $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$, so $f(x) \le M_i \le M$. This means $f$ is bounded above by $M$ on $[a,b]$, contradicting the assumption. Hence $M_{i_0} = \infty$ for some $i_0$.
Moreover, if $x_{i_0-1} = x_{i_0}$, then $[x_{i_0-1}, x_{i_0}] = \{x_{i_0-1}\}$, so $M_{i_0} = f(x_{i_0-1}) \in \mathbb{R}$, contradicting $M_{i_0} = \infty$. Hence $x_{i_0-1} \lt x_{i_0}$, i.e. $\Delta x_{i_0} > 0$. Therefore
$$U(P,f) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta x_i \ge M_{i_0} \Delta x_{i_0} = \infty.$$Since this holds for every partition $P$ of $[a,b]$,
$$\overline{\int_a^b} f dx := \inf U(P,f) = \infty,$$i.e. $\overline{\int_a^b} f dx$ does not exist in $\mathbb{R}$. By Definition 2.6, $f$ is not Riemann-integrable on $[a,b]$.
- (Case 2) $f$ is not bounded below on $[a,b]$. We use a symmetric argument to Case 1. Let $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$ be an arbitrary partition of $[a,b]$. If $m_i > -\infty$ for all $i$, then $m := \min\{m_1, \ldots, m_n\}$ is a finite real number, and by the same reasoning as above $f$ would be bounded below by $m$ on $[a,b]$, contradicting the assumption. Hence there exists $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that
$$m_{i_0} := \inf_{x_{i_0-1} \le x \le x_{i_0}} f(x) = -\infty.$$
Also, if $x_{i_0-1} = x_{i_0}$, then $m_{i_0} = f(x_{i_0-1}) \in \mathbb{R}$, a contradiction, so $\Delta x_{i_0} > 0$. Therefore
$$L(P,f) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i \Delta x_i \le m_{i_0} \Delta x_{i_0} = -\infty.$$Since this holds for every partition $P$ of $[a,b]$,
$$\underline{\int_a^b} f dx := \sup L(P,f) = -\infty,$$i.e. $\underline{\int_a^b} f dx$ does not exist in $\mathbb{R}$. By Definition 2.6, $f$ is not Riemann-integrable on $[a,b]$.
In either case, $f$ is not Riemann-integrable on $[a,b]$; thus if $f$ is unbounded on $[a,b]$, then $f$ is not Riemann-integrable on $[a,b]$.
$\alpha$를 $[a,b]$ 위의 단조증가함수, $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$을 $[a,b]$의 분할이라 하자. 각 $i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$에 대해 다음과 같이 쓴다.

We call $\overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha$ the upper and lower Riemann-Stieltjes integral of $f$ with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a,b]$, respectively. Obviously, one can easily check that for any partition $P$

We say that a function $f$ on $[a,b]$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a,b]$ or is integrable with respect to $\alpha$ in the Riemann-Stieltjes sense on $[a,b]$ if and only if both $\overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha$ and $\underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha$ exist in $\mathbb{R}$ and

$P$와 $P^*$를 $[a,b]$의 분할이라 하자.
Let $P$ and $P^*$ be partitions of $[a,b]$. We say that the partition $P^*$ is a refinement of $P$ if $P^* \supset P$. For given two partitions $P_1$ and $P_2$ of $[a,b]$, a partition $P^*$ is called their common refinement if $P^* = P_1 \cup P_2$.

for some $n \in \mathbb{N}$.
- Case 1) $P^*$ contains only one point more than $P$. Let $x^*$ be the extra point. Then there exists $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that
$$x_{i_0-1} \le x^* \le x_{i_0}.$$
Thus
$$P^* = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{i_0-1}, x^*, x_{i_0}, \ldots, x_n\}.$$Recall
$$M_{i_0} = \sup_{x_{i_0-1} \le x \le x_{i_0}} f(x)$$and put
$$W_1 = \sup_{x_{i_0-1} \le x \le x^*} f(x) \qquad \text{and} \qquad W_2 = \sup_{x^* \le x \le x_{i_0}} f(x).$$Since $[x_{i_0-1}, x^*] \subset [x_{i_0-1}, x_{i_0}]$ and $[x^*, x_{i_0}] \subset [x_{i_0-1}, x_{i_0}]$,
$$W_1 \le M_{i_0} \qquad \text{and} \qquad W_2 \le M_{i_0}.$$Therefore, recalling the definition of $U(P,f,\alpha)$ and $\Delta\alpha_i \ge 0$, we have
$$\begin{aligned} &U(P,f,\alpha) \\ &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_i \\ &= \left( \sum_{i=1}^{i_0-1} M_i \Delta\alpha_i \right) + M_{i_0} \Delta\alpha_{i_0} + \left( \sum_{i=i_0+1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_i \right) \\ &= \left( \sum_{i=1}^{i_0-1} M_i \Delta\alpha_i \right) + M_{i_0} \left( \alpha(x_{i_0}) - \alpha(x^*) + \alpha(x^*) - \alpha(x_{i_0-1}) \right) + \left( \sum_{i=i_0+1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_i \right) \\ &\ge \left( \sum_{i=1}^{i_0-1} M_i \Delta\alpha_i \right) + W_2 \left( \alpha(x_{i_0}) - \alpha(x^*) \right) + W_1 \left( \alpha(x^*) - \alpha(x_{i_0-1}) \right) + \left( \sum_{i=i_0+1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_i \right) \\ &= U(P^*,f,\alpha). \end{aligned}$$ - Case 2) (General case). Since $P^*$ is a refinement of $P$, there exists $k \in \{0, 1, \cdots\}$ such that $P^*$ contains $k$-points more than $P$. If $k = 0$, then $P = P^*$, so the desired inequality holds. If $k = 1$, the desired inequality is proved in Case 1. So we may assume that $k \ge 2$. Put
$$P^* - P = \{x_1^*, \ldots, x_k^*\}, \qquad P_0^* = P,$$
and
$$P_j^* := P \cup \{x_1^*, \ldots, x_j^*\} \quad (j = 1, \ldots, k).$$Then
$$P = P_0^* \subset P_1^* \subset \cdots \subset P_k^* = P^*$$and $P_i^*$ contains only one more point than $P_{i-1}^*$ for all $i = 1, \ldots, k$. Therefore by Case 1,
$$U(P_i^*,f,\alpha) \le U(P_{i-1}^*,f,\alpha) \qquad \forall i \in \{1, \ldots, k\}.$$In particular, we have
$$U(P^*,f,\alpha) = U(P_k^*,f,\alpha) \le \cdots \le U(P_0^*,f,\alpha) = U(P,f,\alpha).$$
This is exactly $U(P^*,f,\alpha) \le U(P,f,\alpha)$, which proves Corollary 2.16.

$|x-y| \lt \delta$를 만족하는 모든 $x, y \in D$에 대해. 특히 $y = c$로 두면
$|x-c| \lt \delta$를 만족하는 모든 $x \in D$에 대해.
Let $f$ be a real-valued function defined on $D \subset \mathbb{R}$. Prove or disprove the following two statements:
- (1) If $f$ is continuous on $D$, then $f$ is uniformly continuous on $D$.
- (2) If $f$ is uniformly continuous on $D$, then $f$ is continuous on $D$.
(1) False (a counterexample). Let $D = (0,1]$ and $f(x) = 1/x$. First, $f$ is continuous on $D$: let $c \in D$ and $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Set
If $x \in D$ satisfies $|x-c| \lt \delta$, then $x > c - \delta \ge c/2 > 0$, so $xc > c^2/2$, and hence
Since $c \in D$ was arbitrary, $f$ is continuous on $D$.
However, $f$ is not uniformly continuous on $D$. Let $\varepsilon = 1$. For any $\delta > 0$, set
Then $0 \lt x \le 1/2 \le 1$ and $0 \lt y \lt x \le 1$, so $x, y \in D$. Moreover
while
(since $x \le 1/2$ gives $1/x \ge 2$). Thus no $\delta > 0$ can satisfy the condition for uniform continuity at $\varepsilon = 1$, so $f$ is not uniformly continuous on $D$. Therefore (1) is false.
(2) True. Assume that $f$ is uniformly continuous on $D$. Let $c \in D$; it suffices to show that $f$ is continuous at $c$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $f$ is uniformly continuous on $D$, there exists $\delta > 0$ such that
for all $x, y \in D$ satisfying $|x-y| \lt \delta$. In particular, taking $y = c$,
for all $x \in D$ satisfying $|x-c| \lt \delta$. This means $f$ is continuous at $c$. Since $c \in D$ was arbitrary, $f$ is continuous on $D$. Therefore (2) is true.

- A set $A$ is called an index set if for each $\alpha \in A$, there exists a corresponding set $G_\alpha$. A set of sets is called a collection of sets or family of sets.
- Let $K \subset \mathbb{R}$. A collection of open sets of $\mathbb{R}$ $\{G_\alpha : \alpha \in A\}$ is called an open cover of $K$ if $G_\alpha$ is open for all $\alpha \in A$ and

If there exists a subset $A_0 \subset A$ such that
$$K \subset \bigcup_{\alpha \in A_0} G_\alpha,$$then $\{G_\alpha : \alpha \in A_0\}$ is called a subcover of the open cover $\{G_\alpha : \alpha \in A\}$. Additionally, if $A_0$ is a finite set, then $\{G_\alpha : \alpha \in A_0\}$ is called a finite subcover of the open cover $\{G_\alpha : \alpha \in A\}$.
- A subset $K \subset \mathbb{R}$ is called compact if every open cover of $K$ has a finite subcover.
- Heine-Borel Theorem says that any bounded and closed subset of $\mathbb{R}$ is compact. In particular, $[a,b]$ is compact for all $a \lt b$.
그러면 $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 연속일 필요충분조건은 $f$가 $[a,b]$에서 균등연속인 것이다.
$c \in [a,b]$라 하고, $f$가 $c$에서 연속임을 보이면 충분하다.
$|x - y| \lt \delta$를 만족하는 모든 $x, y \in [a,b]$에 대해. 특히,
$|x - c| \lt \delta$, 즉 $x \in (c - \delta, c + \delta) \cap D$를 만족하는 모든 $x \in [a,b]$에 대해. $f$가 모든 $c \in [a,b]$에서 연속이라고 가정하자. 그러면 각 $c \in [a,b]$에 대해 다음을 만족하는 $\delta_c > 0$이 존재한다.
$(c - \delta_c, c + \delta_c) \cap [a,b]$의 모든 $x$에 대해. 각 $(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2)$가 열린집합이고
이므로 모임 $\{(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2) : c \in [a,b]\}$는 $[a,b]$의 열린 덮개임에 유의하자.
$|x - y| \lt \delta$를 만족하는 $x, y \in [a,b]$라 하자.
Let $f$ be a real-valued function defined on a closed interval $[a,b]$. Then $f$ is continuous on $[a,b]$ if and only if $f$ is uniformly continuous on $[a,b]$.
First we prove “the if part ($\Leftarrow$)”. Assume that $f$ is uniformly continuous on $[a,b]$. Let $c \in [a,b]$ and it is sufficient to show that $f$ is continuous at $c$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Then since $f$ is uniformly continuous on $[a,b]$, there exists a $\delta > 0$ such that
for all $x, y \in [a,b]$ satisfying $|x - y| \lt \delta$. In particular,
for all $x \in [a,b]$ satisfying $|x - c| \lt \delta$, i.e. $x \in (c - \delta, c + \delta) \cap D$. Therefore $f$ is continuous at $c$. Next we prove “the only if part ($\Rightarrow$)”. Assume that $f$ is continuous at $c$ for all $c \in [a,b]$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Then for each $c \in [a,b]$, there exists a $\delta_c > 0$ such that
for all $x \in (c - \delta_c, c + \delta_c) \cap [a,b]$. Note that the collection $\{(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2) : c \in [a,b]\}$ is an open cover of $[a,b]$ since each $(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2)$ is open and
Thus there exists a finite subcover
such that
since $[a,b]$ is compact. Set
Let $x, y \in [a,b]$ such that $|x - y| \lt \delta$. It is sufficient to show that
By (2.25), there exists a $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that
Then since
we have
Thus by (2.24),
각 $(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2)$가 열린집합이고
이므로 (모든 $c \in K$가 $(c-\delta_c/2,c+\delta_c/2)$에 속하므로), 모임 $\{(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2) : c \in K\}$는 $K$의 열린 덮개이다.
$|x - y| \lt \delta$를 만족하는 $x, y \in K$라 하자.
$x, y \in K$이므로 $x, y \in (c_{i_0} - \delta_{c_{i_0}}, c_{i_0} + \delta_{c_{i_0}}) \cap K$이고, 따라서
Let $f$ be a real-valued function defined on a compact set $K \subset \mathbb{R}$. Assume that $f$ is continuous on $K$. Show that $f$ is uniformly continuous on $K$.
Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $f$ is continuous on $K$, for each $c \in K$ there exists $\delta_c > 0$ such that
for all $x \in (c - \delta_c, c + \delta_c) \cap K$. Since each $(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2)$ is open and
(as each $c \in K$ belongs to $(c-\delta_c/2,c+\delta_c/2)$), the collection $\{(c - \delta_c/2, c + \delta_c/2) : c \in K\}$ is an open cover of $K$. Since $K$ is compact, there exists a finite subcover
such that
Set
Let $x, y \in K$ satisfy $|x - y| \lt \delta$. It is sufficient to show that
By the subcover condition above, there exists $i_0 \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$ such that
Then since
we have
i.e.
Since $x, y \in K$, we have $x, y \in (c_{i_0} - \delta_{c_{i_0}}, c_{i_0} + \delta_{c_{i_0}}) \cap K$, and hence
Since $x, y \in K$ with $|x-y| \lt \delta$ were arbitrary, $f$ is uniformly continuous on $K$.
