$f$가 $[a, b]$에서 연속함수이고 $\alpha$가 $[a, b]$에서 단조증가함수라 하자.

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a))\, \eta < \varepsilon. \tag{2.26}$$

$$|f(x) - f(y)| < \eta$$

단, $|x - y| < \delta$를 만족하는 모든 $x, y \in [a, b]$에 대해서이다.

$$\frac{b - a}{n} < \delta.$$

$$x_i = a + i \cdot \frac{b - a}{n} \qquad (i = 0, \ldots, n).$$

그러면

$$P := \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$$

$$\Delta x_i := x_i - x_{i-1} = \frac{b - a}{n} < \delta \qquad \forall i.$$

따라서 어떤 $i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$에 대해 $x, y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$이면

$$f(x) - f(y) \le |f(x) - f(y)| < \eta$$

이고

$$\begin{aligned} M_i - m_i &= \sup_{x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} f(x) - \inf_{y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} f(y) \\ &= \sup_{x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} f(x) + \sup_{y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} (-f(y)) \le \eta. \end{aligned}$$

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i \le \eta \sum_{i=1}^{n} \Delta\alpha_i = \eta(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) < \varepsilon.$$
English

Let $f$ be a continuous function on $[a, b]$ and $\alpha$ be a monotonically increasing function on $[a, b]$. Then $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Due to Theorem 2.19, it is sufficient to find a partition $P$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Choose a $\eta > 0$ so that

$$(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a))\, \eta < \varepsilon. \tag{2.26}$$

By Theorem 2.24, $f$ is uniformly continuous on $[a, b]$. Thus there exists a $\delta > 0$ such that

$$|f(x) - f(y)| < \eta$$

for all $x, y \in [a, b]$ satisfying $|x - y| < \delta$. Choose a large $n \in \mathbb{N}$ so that

$$\frac{b - a}{n} < \delta.$$

and put

$$x_i = a + i \cdot \frac{b - a}{n} \qquad (i = 0, \ldots, n).$$

Then

$$P := \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$$

is a partition of $[a, b]$ such that

$$\Delta x_i := x_i - x_{i-1} = \frac{b - a}{n} < \delta \qquad \forall i.$$

Thus if $x, y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$ for some $i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}$, then

$$f(x) - f(y) \le |f(x) - f(y)| < \eta$$

and

$$\begin{aligned} M_i - m_i &= \sup_{x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} f(x) - \inf_{y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} f(y) \\ &= \sup_{x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} f(x) + \sup_{y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]} (-f(y)) \le \eta. \end{aligned}$$

Therefore, for this partition $P$, by (2.26) we have

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i \le \eta \sum_{i=1}^{n} \Delta\alpha_i = \eta(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) < \varepsilon.$$

$\alpha(b) = \alpha(a)$이면 정리는 자명하다. 그러므로 $\alpha(b) > \alpha(a)$라 가정할 수 있다. $\varepsilon > 0$과 $n \in \mathbb{N}$이 주어졌다고 하자.

$$\Delta\alpha_i := \alpha(x_i) - \alpha(x_{i-1}) = \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} \qquad \forall i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}.$$

$$P_n := \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1}, x_n\}.$$

$$\begin{aligned} U(P_n, f, \alpha) - L(P_n, f, \alpha) &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i \\ &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} (f(x_i) - f(x_{i-1})) \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} \\ &= \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} \sum_{i=1}^{n} (f(x_i) - f(x_{i-1})) \\ &= \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} (f(b) - f(a)). \end{aligned}$$

$$\frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n_0} (f(b) - f(a)) < \varepsilon.$$

$$U(P_{n_0}, f, \alpha) - L(P_{n_0}, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$
English

Let $f$ and $\alpha$ be monotonic increasing functions on $[a, b]$. Assume that $\alpha$ is continuous on $[a, b]$. Then $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

If $\alpha(b) = \alpha(a)$, then the theorem is trivial. So we may assume $\alpha(b) > \alpha(a)$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given and $n \in \mathbb{N}$. It is sufficient to find a partition $P$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Put $x_0 = a$, and $x_n = b$. Recall that $\alpha$ is continuous on $[a, b]$ and $\alpha$ is monotonically increasing on $[a, b]$. Thus applying the intermediate value theorem (Theorem 1.51), we can find $x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1}$ so that

$$\alpha(x_i) = \alpha(a) + i \cdot \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} \qquad (i = 1, \ldots, n-1)$$

and

$$x_0 = a \le x_1 \le \cdots \le x_{n-1} \le b = x_n.$$

In particular, we have

$$\Delta\alpha_i := \alpha(x_i) - \alpha(x_{i-1}) = \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} \qquad \forall i \in \{1, \ldots, n\}.$$

Define

$$P_n := \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_{n-1}, x_n\}.$$

Then $P_n$ is a partition of $[a, b]$. Thus recalling $f$ is monotonically increasing, we have

$$\begin{aligned} U(P_n, f, \alpha) - L(P_n, f, \alpha) &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i \\ &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} (f(x_i) - f(x_{i-1})) \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} \\ &= \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} \sum_{i=1}^{n} (f(x_i) - f(x_{i-1})) \\ &= \frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n} (f(b) - f(a)). \end{aligned}$$

This process holds for all $n \in \mathbb{N}$. Choose a $n_0 \in \mathbb{N}$ so that

$$\frac{\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)}{n_0} (f(b) - f(a)) < \varepsilon.$$

Then finally we have

$$U(P_{n_0}, f, \alpha) - L(P_{n_0}, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$M_i := \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x), \qquad m_i := \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x).$$

$$\sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -m_i \qquad \text{and} \qquad \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -M_i. \tag{*}$$

모든 $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$에 대해 $f(x) \ge m_i$이므로 $-f(x) \le -m_i$이고, 따라서 $-m_i$는 $\{-f(x) : x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i\}$의 상계이다.

$$f(y) < m_i + \varepsilon'$$

$$\sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -m_i.$$

한편 모든 $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$에 대해 $f(x) \le M_i$이므로 $-f(x) \ge -M_i$이고, 따라서 $-M_i$는 $\{-f(x) : x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i\}$의 하계이다.

$$\inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -M_i$$

$$U(P, -f, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left( \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) \right) \Delta\alpha_i = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (-m_i) \Delta\alpha_i = -\sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i \Delta\alpha_i = -L(P, f, \alpha)$$

따라서

$$U(P, -f, \alpha) - L(P, -f, \alpha) = -L(P, f, \alpha) - \left( -U(P, f, \alpha) \right) = U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$\overline{\int_a^b} (-f) d\alpha = \inf_P U(P, -f, \alpha) = \inf_P \left( -L(P, f, \alpha) \right) = -\sup_P L(P, f, \alpha) = -\underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = -\int_a^b f d\alpha$$

English

Let $f$ be a real-valued function on $[a, b]$ and $\alpha$ be a monotonic increasing function on $[a, b]$. Assume that $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Show that the function $-f$ is also Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, by Theorem 2.19 there exists a partition $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

For each $i = 1, \ldots, n$, put

$$M_i := \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x), \qquad m_i := \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x).$$

We first show

$$\sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -m_i \qquad \text{and} \qquad \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -M_i. \tag{*}$$

For all $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$, $f(x) \ge m_i$, so $-f(x) \le -m_i$, and thus $-m_i$ is an upper bound of $\{-f(x) : x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i\}$. Let $\varepsilon' > 0$ be given. Since $m_i = \inf_{[x_{i-1}, x_i]} f$, by Remark 1.49 there exists a $y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$ such that

$$f(y) < m_i + \varepsilon'$$

which means $-f(y) > -m_i - \varepsilon'$. Since $\varepsilon' > 0$ is arbitrary, by the definition of the supremum (Remark 1.49),

$$\sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -m_i.$$

Similarly, since $M_i = \sup_{[x_{i-1}, x_i]} f$, for any $\varepsilon' > 0$ there exists a $y' \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$ such that $f(y') > M_i - \varepsilon'$, which means $-f(y') < -M_i + \varepsilon'$. On the other hand, $f(x) \le M_i$ for all $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$, so $-f(x) \ge -M_i$ and thus $-M_i$ is a lower bound of $\{-f(x) : x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i\}$. Combining the two facts shows

$$\inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) = -M_i.$$

This proves (*). Therefore by (*),

$$U(P, -f, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left( \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) \right) \Delta\alpha_i = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (-m_i) \Delta\alpha_i = -\sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i \Delta\alpha_i = -L(P, f, \alpha)$$

and

$$L(P, -f, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left( \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (-f(x)) \right) \Delta\alpha_i = \sum_{i=1}^{n} (-M_i) \Delta\alpha_i = -\sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_i = -U(P, f, \alpha).$$

Thus

$$U(P, -f, \alpha) - L(P, -f, \alpha) = -L(P, f, \alpha) - \left( -U(P, f, \alpha) \right) = U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

By Theorem 2.19, $-f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. (As a remark, repeating the same argument over every partition $P$ of $[a, b]$ gives

$$\overline{\int_a^b} (-f) d\alpha = \inf_P U(P, -f, \alpha) = \inf_P \left( -L(P, f, \alpha) \right) = -\sup_P L(P, f, \alpha) = -\underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = -\int_a^b f d\alpha$$

and similarly $\underline{\int_a^b} (-f) d\alpha = -\overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = -\int_a^b f d\alpha$, so we also obtain

$$\int_a^b (-f) d\alpha = -\int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

$$-g = -(-f) = f$$

English

Prove Corollary 2.29.

Put $g := -f$. Since $f$ is monotonically decreasing on $[a, b]$, by Definition 1.43(iii), $f(x) \ge f(y)$ whenever $x, y \in [a, b]$ and $x < y$. Thus $g(x) = -f(x) \le -f(y) = g(y)$, and by Definition 1.43(i), $g = -f$ is monotonically increasing on $[a, b]$. Since $\alpha$ is monotonically increasing and continuous on $[a, b]$, applying Theorem 2.27 to $g$ shows that $g$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Now applying Exercise 2.28 to $g$ (which is integrable with respect to $\alpha$), $-g$ is also Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. But

$$-g = -(-f) = f,$$

so $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

$$|\alpha(x) - \alpha(c_i)| < \varepsilon \tag{2.27}$$

단, $x \in [c_i - \delta_i, c_i + \delta_i] \cap [a, b]$인 모든 $x$에 대해서이다.

$$K := [a, b] \setminus \bigcup_{i=1}^{k} (c_i - \delta_i/2, c_i + \delta_i/2) = [a, b] \cap \left( \bigcup_{i=1}^{k} (c_i - \delta_i/2, c_i + \delta_i/2) \right)^{c}.$$

$$|f(x) - f(y)| < \varepsilon \tag{2.28}$$

단, $|x - y| < \delta$를 만족하는 모든 $x, y \in K \subset [a, b]$에 대해서이다.

$$\frac{b - a}{n} < \min\{\delta, \delta_1/2, \ldots, \delta_k/2\} \tag{2.29}$$

$$x_i = a + i \cdot \frac{b - a}{n} \qquad (i = 0, \ldots, n).$$

$$P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\} \cup \{c_1, \ldots, c_k\}.$$

$$P = \{z_0, z_1, \ldots, z_{n+k}\}$$

$$a = z_0 \le z_1 \le \cdots \le z_{n+k} = b.$$

명백히

$$|\Delta z_i| := |z_i - z_{i-1}| \le \frac{b - a}{n} < \min\{\delta, \delta_1/2, \ldots, \delta_k/2\}. \tag{2.30}$$

$$[z_{i-1}, z_i] \subset K.$$

그러면

$$\{1, \ldots, n+k\} = B_1 \cup \left( \{1, 2, \ldots, n+k\} \setminus B_1 \right).$$

$$B_2 = \{1, 2, \ldots, n+k\} \setminus B_1.$$

또한 $i \in B_1$이면 (2.28)에 의해

$$M_i - m_i \le \varepsilon,$$

여기서

$$M_i = \sup_{z_{i-1} \le x \le z_i} f(x), \quad \text{and} \quad m_i = \inf_{z_{i-1} \le x \le z_i} f(x).$$

$$K := [a, b] \cap \left( \bigcup_{i=1}^{k} (c_i - \delta_i/2, c_i + \delta_i/2) \right)^{c},$$

다시 말해, $i \in B_2$이면 (2.30)에 의해 어떤 $j \in \{1, \ldots, k\}$에 대해 $[z_{i-1}, z_i] \subset (c_j - \delta_j, c_j + \delta_j) \cap [a, b]$이다. 더 나아가 $i_1, \ldots, i_N \in B_2$이고 $i_1 \le \cdots \le i_N$이며 $z_{i_i-1}, z_{i_1}, z_{i_2-1}, z_{i_2}, \ldots, z_{i_N-1}, z_{i_N}$이 어떤 $j \in \{1, \ldots, k\}$에 대해 $(c_j - \delta, c_j + \delta_j) \cap [a, b]$에 포함되면, 보조정리 2.31에 의해 다음을 얻는다.

$$\sum_{\ell=1}^{N} (M_{i_\ell} - m_{i_\ell})\Delta\alpha_{i_\ell} \le (M_{c_j} - m_{c_j})(\alpha(b \wedge (c_j + \delta_j)) - \alpha(a \vee (c_j - \delta_j))),$$

여기서

$$M_{c_j} = \sup_{x \in [c_j - \delta_j, c_j + \delta_j] \cap [a, b]} f(x), \quad m_{c_j} = \inf_{x \in [c_j - \delta_j, c_j + \delta_j] \cap [a, b]} f(x).$$

이제 $M := \sup_{x \in [a, b]} |f(x)|$라 두고

$$\Delta\alpha_{c_j} = \alpha(b \wedge (c_j + \delta_j)) - \alpha(a \vee (c_j - \delta_j)),$$

$$\begin{aligned} \sum_{i \in B_2} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i &\le \sum_{j=1}^{k} (M_{c_j} - m_{c_j})\Delta\alpha_{c_j} \\ &\le \sum_{j=1}^{k} 4M\varepsilon = 4kM\varepsilon. \end{aligned}$$

따라서

$$\begin{aligned} U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) &= \sum_{i=1}^{n+k} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i \\ &= \sum_{i \in B_1} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i + \sum_{i \in B_2} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i \\ &\le \varepsilon \sum_{i \in B_1} \Delta\alpha_i + 4kM\varepsilon \\ &\le \varepsilon(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) + 4kM\varepsilon = \varepsilon \left( \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 4kM \right). \end{aligned} \tag{2.31}$$

English

Let $f$ be a bounded function on $[a, b]$ and $\alpha$ be a monotonically increasing function on $[a, b]$. Assume that $f$ has only finitely many points of discontinuity on $[a, b]$ and $\alpha$ is continuous at every point at which $f$ is discontinuous, i.e. there exists points $c_1, \ldots, c_k \in [a, b]$ such that

$$c_1 \le \cdots \le c_k,$$

$f$ is continuous at $c$ for all $c \in [a, b] \setminus \{c_1, \ldots, c_k\}$ and $\alpha$ is continuous at $c_i$ for all $i = 1, \ldots, k$. Then $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. For each $c_i$ $(i = 1, \ldots, k)$, $\alpha$ is continuous at $c_i$ and thus there exists $\delta_i > 0$ such that

$$|\alpha(x) - \alpha(c_i)| < \varepsilon \tag{2.27}$$

for all $x \in [c_i - \delta_i, c_i + \delta_i] \cap [a, b]$. Define

$$K := [a, b] \setminus \bigcup_{i=1}^{k} (c_i - \delta_i/2, c_i + \delta_i/2) = [a, b] \cap \left( \bigcup_{i=1}^{k} (c_i - \delta_i/2, c_i + \delta_i/2) \right)^{c}.$$

Then since $K$ is closed and bounded, $K$ is compact by the Heine-Borel theorem. Thus $f$ is uniformly continuous on $K \subset [a, b]$ and there exists a $\delta > 0$ such that

$$|f(x) - f(y)| < \varepsilon \tag{2.28}$$

for all $x, y \in K \subset [a, b]$ satisfying $|x - y| < \delta$. Choose a large $n \in \mathbb{N}$ so that

$$\frac{b - a}{n} < \min\{\delta, \delta_1/2, \ldots, \delta_k/2\} \tag{2.29}$$

and put

$$x_i = a + i \cdot \frac{b - a}{n} \qquad (i = 0, \ldots, n).$$

Define

$$P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\} \cup \{c_1, \ldots, c_k\}.$$

Then rearranging $P$, we can regard $P$ as a partition, i.e. there exist $z_0, z_1, \ldots, z_{n+k}$ such that

$$P = \{z_0, z_1, \ldots, z_{n+k}\}$$

and

$$a = z_0 \le z_1 \le \cdots \le z_{n+k} = b.$$

Obviously,

$$|\Delta z_i| := |z_i - z_{i-1}| \le \frac{b - a}{n} < \min\{\delta, \delta_1/2, \ldots, \delta_k/2\}. \tag{2.30}$$

We write $i \in B_1$ iff

$$[z_{i-1}, z_i] \subset K.$$

Then

$$\{1, \ldots, n+k\} = B_1 \cup \left( \{1, 2, \ldots, n+k\} \setminus B_1 \right).$$

and put

$$B_2 = \{1, 2, \ldots, n+k\} \setminus B_1.$$

Moreover, if $i \in B_1$, then by (2.28),

$$M_i - m_i \le \varepsilon,$$

where

$$M_i = \sup_{z_{i-1} \le x \le z_i} f(x), \quad \text{and} \quad m_i = \inf_{z_{i-1} \le x \le z_i} f(x).$$

On the other hand, if $i \in B_2$, then $[z_{i-1}, z_i]$ is not a subset of

$$K := [a, b] \cap \left( \bigcup_{i=1}^{k} (c_i - \delta_i/2, c_i + \delta_i/2) \right)^{c},$$

thus there exists a $j$ such that $(c_j - \delta_j/2, c_j + \delta_j/2) \cap [z_{i-1}, z_i] \neq \emptyset$. In other words, if $i \in B_2$, then $[z_{i-1}, z_i] \subset (c_j - \delta_j, c_j + \delta_j) \cap [a, b]$ by (2.30) for some $j \in \{1, \ldots, k\}$. Moreover if $i_1, \ldots, i_N \in B_2$, $i_1 \le \cdots \le i_N$, and $z_{i_i-1}, z_{i_1}, z_{i_2-1}, z_{i_2}, \ldots, z_{i_N-1}, z_{i_N}$ are contained in $(c_j - \delta, c_j + \delta_j) \cap [a, b]$ for some $j \in \{1, \ldots, k\}$, then by Lemma 2.31 we have

$$\sum_{\ell=1}^{N} (M_{i_\ell} - m_{i_\ell})\Delta\alpha_{i_\ell} \le (M_{c_j} - m_{c_j})(\alpha(b \wedge (c_j + \delta_j)) - \alpha(a \vee (c_j - \delta_j))),$$

where

$$M_{c_j} = \sup_{x \in [c_j - \delta_j, c_j + \delta_j] \cap [a, b]} f(x), \quad m_{c_j} = \inf_{x \in [c_j - \delta_j, c_j + \delta_j] \cap [a, b]} f(x).$$

Thus putting $M = \sup_{x \in [a, b]} |f(x)|$ and

$$\Delta\alpha_{c_j} = \alpha(b \wedge (c_j + \delta_j)) - \alpha(a \vee (c_j - \delta_j)),$$

by (2.27) we have

$$\begin{aligned} \sum_{i \in B_2} (M_i - m_i)\Delta\alpha_i &\le \sum_{j=1}^{k} (M_{c_j} - m_{c_j})\Delta\alpha_{c_j} \\ &\le \sum_{j=1}^{k} 4M\varepsilon = 4kM\varepsilon. \end{aligned}$$

Therefore

The theorem is proved since $\varepsilon > 0$ is an arbitrary positive constant.

Why an Arbitrary Positive Constant Completes the Proof

$$C := \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 4kM \ge 0.$$

여기서 $k$는 정리 2.32에서 나열한 점 $c_1, \ldots, c_k$의 개수($f$의 불연속점을 모두 포함한다)이고 $M = \sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x)|$이다.

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) \le \varepsilon C$$

$$\varepsilon := \frac{\varepsilon'}{C+1} > 0$$

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) \le \varepsilon C = \frac{C}{C+1} \varepsilon' < \varepsilon'$$

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon'$$

English

Recall that $\varepsilon$ in (2.31) is an arbitrary positive constant. Explain why (2.31) completes the proof.

Put

$$C := \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 4kM \ge 0,$$

where $k$ is the number of the points $c_1, \ldots, c_k$ listed in Theorem 2.32 (they include every point of discontinuity of $f$) and $M = \sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x)|$. Since $f$ is bounded and $k$ is finite, $C$ is a finite constant, and crucially $C$ is a fixed value depending only on $f$, $\alpha$, and $k$ — not on the choice of $\varepsilon$ nor on the partition $P$ constructed to obtain (2.31). What (2.31) says is that no matter which value of the free parameter $\varepsilon > 0$ is chosen in the proof above, the partition $P$ built from that $\varepsilon$ satisfies

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) \le \varepsilon C.$$

Now, to verify the criterion of Theorem 2.19, let an arbitrary $\varepsilon' > 0$ be given (this is the target tolerance appearing in (2.18) of Theorem 2.19, a quantity distinct from the parameter $\varepsilon$ used in the proof above). Put

$$\varepsilon := \frac{\varepsilon'}{C+1} > 0$$

(since $C \ge 0$, $C + 1 > 0$, so this $\varepsilon$ is a well-defined positive number even when $C = 0$). Substituting this $\varepsilon$ into the construction in the proof of Theorem 2.32, by (2.31) we obtain a partition $P$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) \le \varepsilon C = \frac{C}{C+1} \varepsilon' < \varepsilon'$$

where the last inequality holds since $\frac{C}{C+1} < 1$. That is, for any given $\varepsilon' > 0$, choosing $\varepsilon$ as above (depending on $\varepsilon'$) and running the construction of Theorem 2.32 yields a partition $P$ satisfying

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon'$$

as required by (2.18) of Theorem 2.19. Since $\varepsilon' > 0$ was arbitrary, the criterion of Theorem 2.19 is satisfied, and therefore $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. In short, the fact that $C$ is independent of $\varepsilon$ lets us invert the single inequality $U - L \le \varepsilon C$ to recover an arbitrarily small $U - L$ for any target $\varepsilon'$, by taking $\varepsilon = \varepsilon'/(C+1)$; this is exactly why (2.31) completes the proof of Theorem 2.32.

A Countable Discontinuity Set with a Single Limit Point
한국어

$f$가 $[a, b]$에서 유계함수이고, $\alpha$가 $[a, b]$에서 단조증가함수이며, $A$가 $[a, b]$의 가산 부분집합이라 하자. $A$가 $[a, b]$ 안에 극한점을 오직 하나만 가지고, $f$가 $[a, b] \setminus A$에서 연속이며, $\alpha$가 $A$에서 연속이라고 가정하자.

$\varepsilon > 0$이 주어졌다고 하자. $M := \sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x)|$라 두자. $M = 0$이면 $f \equiv 0$이므로 $f$는 자명하게 $[a, b]$에서 $\alpha$에 관하여 리만-스틸체스 적분가능하다. 따라서 $M > 0$이라 가정해도 좋다. $p$를 $[a, b]$ 안에서 $A$가 갖는 (가정에 의해 유일한) 극한점이라 하자.

  • (경우 a) $p \notin A$인 경우. 그러면 $p \in [a, b] \setminus A$이고 $f$가 $[a, b] \setminus A$에서 연속이므로, $f$는 특히 $p$에서 연속이다.
    $$|f(x) - f(p)| < \frac{\varepsilon}{2} \qquad \forall x \in (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b].$$

    $\eta := \delta/2$, $I := [p - \eta, p + \eta] \cap [a, b]$라 두자. 그러면 $I \subset (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b]$이므로, 임의의 $x, y \in I$에 대해

    $$f(x) - f(y) \le |f(x) - f(p)| + |f(p) - f(y)| < \varepsilon$$

    이고, 따라서

    $$M_I - m_I \le \varepsilon, \qquad \text{where} \quad M_I := \sup_{x \in I} f(x), \ m_I := \inf_{x \in I} f(x). \tag{a}$$
  • (경우 b) $p \in A$인 경우.
    $$|\alpha(x) - \alpha(p)| < \frac{\varepsilon}{2} \qquad \forall x \in (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b].$$

    $\eta := \delta/2$, $I := [p - \eta, p + \eta] \cap [a, b]$라 두자. 그러면 $I \subset (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b]$이므로

    $$\alpha(\sup I) - \alpha(\inf I) \le |\alpha(\sup I) - \alpha(p)| + |\alpha(p) - \alpha(\inf I)| < \varepsilon. \tag{b}$$

    또한 $[a,b]$에서 $|f| \le M$이므로 명백히

    $$M_I - m_I \le 2M, \qquad \text{where} \quad M_I := \sup_{x \in I} f(x), \ m_I := \inf_{x \in I} f(x).$$

어느 경우든 위에서 정한 $\eta > 0$에 대해 $I := [p - \eta, p + \eta] \cap [a, b]$이다. 다음으로 $A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta)$가 유한집합임을 보인다. 집합

$$K' := [a, b] \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta)$$

는 $[a, b]$에서 열린집합 $(p - \eta, p + \eta)$를 제거한 것이므로 닫힌집합이고, $[a, b]$의 부분집합이므로 유계이다. $q \in K'$이므로 $q \notin (p - \eta, p + \eta)$인 반면 $p \in (p - \eta, p + \eta)$이므로 $q \neq p$이고, $q \in K' \subset [a, b]$이면서 $A$가 $[a, b]$ 안에 갖는 극한점은 $p$뿐이므로 $q$는 $A$의 극한점이 아니다.

$$V_q \cap (A \setminus \{q\}) = \emptyset, \qquad \text{i.e.} \quad V_q \cap A \subset \{q\}$$

즉 $q_1, \ldots, q_m \in K'$이 존재하여 $K' \subset \bigcup_{r=1}^{m} V_{q_r}$이다. $A \subset [a, b]$이므로 $A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta) = A \cap K'$이고, 따라서

$$A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta) = A \cap K' \subset \bigcup_{r=1}^{m} \left( A \cap V_{q_r} \right) \subset \{q_1, \ldots, q_m\}$$

$$J_1 := [a, p - \eta], \qquad J_2 := [p + \eta, b]$$

(단, $p - \eta \le a$이면 $J_1$은 생각하지 않는다 — 이 경우 $[a,b] \setminus \mathring{I}$의 왼쪽 조각이 존재하지 않는다 — 마찬가지로 $p + \eta \ge b$이면 $J_2$는 생각하지 않는다). $J_1$이 존재하는 경우, $A \cap J_1 \subset A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta)$이므로 $A \cap J_1$은 앞서 보인 유한성에 의해 유한집합이다. $f$가 $[a, b] \setminus A$에서 연속이므로 $f$는 $J_1 \setminus A$의 모든 점에서 연속이고, $\alpha$가 $A$에서 연속이므로 $\alpha$는 $A \cap J_1$의 모든 점에서 연속이다. $A \cap J_1 = \emptyset$이면 $f$는 $J_1$ 전체에서 연속이므로 정리 2.26에 의해 $f$는 $J_1$에서 $\alpha$에 관하여 리만-스틸체스 적분가능하고, $A \cap J_1 \neq \emptyset$이면 정리 2.32를 $[a,b]$ 대신 $J_1$에, $\{c_1, \ldots, c_k\}$ 대신 $A \cap J_1$에 적용하여 같은 결론을 얻는다.

$$U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

이제 $P_1$(존재한다면), $I$의 두 끝점 $\max\{a, p-\eta\}$와 $\min\{b, p+\eta\}$, $P_2$(존재한다면)를 모두 합하여 $[a, b]$의 분할 $P$를 만들자. $J_1$, $I$, $J_2$가 $[a, b]$를 순서대로 겹치지 않게 덮으므로, $P$는 실제로 $[a, b]$의 분할이고 $U(P, f, \alpha)$와 $L(P, f, \alpha)$는 각각 $J_1$, $I$, $J_2$ 위의 기여의 합으로 분해된다.

$$U(P, f, \alpha) = U(P_1, f, \alpha) + M_I \Delta\alpha_I + U(P_2, f, \alpha),$$
$$L(P, f, \alpha) = L(P_1, f, \alpha) + m_I \Delta\alpha_I + L(P_2, f, \alpha),$$

여기서 $\Delta\alpha_I := \alpha(\min\{b, p+\eta\}) - \alpha(\max\{a, p-\eta\})$이고, $J_1$ 또는 $J_2$가 존재하지 않으면 해당 항은 $0$으로 둔다. 따라서

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) = \left[ U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) \right] + (M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I + \left[ U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) \right] < \varepsilon + (M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I + \varepsilon.$$

(경우 a)이면 $\Delta\alpha_I \le \alpha(b) - \alpha(a)$이고 (a)에 의해 $M_I - m_I \le \varepsilon$이므로 $(M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I \le \varepsilon(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a))$이다.

$$(M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I \le \varepsilon\left( \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 2M \right)$$

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon \left( 2 + \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 2M \right) = \varepsilon C,$$

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon C = \frac{C}{C+1}\varepsilon' < \varepsilon'$$

English

Let $f$ be a bounded function on $[a, b]$, $\alpha$ be a monotonically increasing function on $[a, b]$, $A$ be a countable subset of $[a, b]$. Assume that $A$ has an only one limit point in $[a, b]$, $f$ is continuous on $[a, b] \setminus A$, and $\alpha$ is continuous on $A$. Show that $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Put $M := \sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x)|$. If $M = 0$, then $f \equiv 0$, so $f$ is trivially Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. So we may assume $M > 0$. Let $p$ be the (by hypothesis, unique) limit point that $A$ has in $[a, b]$.

We choose $\eta > 0$ as follows.

  • Case a) $p \notin A$. Then $p \in [a, b] \setminus A$, and since $f$ is continuous on $[a, b] \setminus A$, $f$ is in particular continuous at $p$. Thus there exists $\delta > 0$ such that
    $$|f(x) - f(p)| < \frac{\varepsilon}{2} \qquad \forall x \in (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b].$$

    Put $\eta := \delta/2$ and $I := [p - \eta, p + \eta] \cap [a, b]$. Then $I \subset (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b]$, so for all $x, y \in I$,

    $$f(x) - f(y) \le |f(x) - f(p)| + |f(p) - f(y)| < \varepsilon,$$

    and thus

    $$M_I - m_I \le \varepsilon, \qquad \text{where} \quad M_I := \sup_{x \in I} f(x), \ m_I := \inf_{x \in I} f(x). \tag{a}$$
  • Case b) $p \in A$. Then since $\alpha$ is continuous on $A$, $\alpha$ is in particular continuous at $p$. Thus there exists $\delta > 0$ such that
    $$|\alpha(x) - \alpha(p)| < \frac{\varepsilon}{2} \qquad \forall x \in (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b].$$

    Put $\eta := \delta/2$ and $I := [p - \eta, p + \eta] \cap [a, b]$. Then $I \subset (p - \delta, p + \delta) \cap [a, b]$, so

    $$\alpha(\sup I) - \alpha(\inf I) \le |\alpha(\sup I) - \alpha(p)| + |\alpha(p) - \alpha(\inf I)| < \varepsilon. \tag{b}$$

    Moreover, since $|f| \le M$ on $[a,b]$, obviously

    $$M_I - m_I \le 2M, \qquad \text{where} \quad M_I := \sup_{x \in I} f(x), \ m_I := \inf_{x \in I} f(x).$$

In either case, $I := [p - \eta, p + \eta] \cap [a, b]$ for the $\eta > 0$ chosen above. Next we show that $A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta)$ is a finite set. The set

$$K' := [a, b] \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta)$$

is closed, being $[a, b]$ with the open interval $(p - \eta, p + \eta)$ removed, and bounded, being a subset of $[a, b]$. Thus by the Heine-Borel theorem (Remark 2.23), $K'$ is compact. Now take an arbitrary $q \in K'$. Since $q \in K'$ we have $q \notin (p - \eta, p + \eta)$, while $p \in (p - \eta, p + \eta)$, so $q \neq p$; and since $q \in K' \subset [a, b]$ while $p$ is the only limit point that $A$ has in $[a, b]$, $q$ is not a limit point of $A$. Hence, by the definition of a limit point, there is an open interval $V_q$ containing $q$ such that

$$V_q \cap (A \setminus \{q\}) = \emptyset, \qquad \text{i.e.} \quad V_q \cap A \subset \{q\}.$$

Then $\{V_q : q \in K'\}$ is an open cover of $K'$, so by the compactness of $K'$ (Remark 2.23) it has a finite subcover: there exist $q_1, \ldots, q_m \in K'$ with $K' \subset \bigcup_{r=1}^{m} V_{q_r}$. Since $A \subset [a, b]$, we have $A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta) = A \cap K'$, and therefore

$$A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta) = A \cap K' \subset \bigcup_{r=1}^{m} \left( A \cap V_{q_r} \right) \subset \{q_1, \ldots, q_m\}.$$

That is, $A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta)$ has at most $m$ elements and hence is finite. (Only the definition of compactness in Remark 2.23 — every open cover admits a finite subcover — is used here; no theorem outside the lecture notes is invoked.)

Define

$$J_1 := [a, p - \eta], \qquad J_2 := [p + \eta, b]$$

(if $p - \eta \le a$, we do not consider $J_1$ — there is no left piece of $[a,b] \setminus \mathring{I}$ in this case — and similarly we do not consider $J_2$ if $p + \eta \ge b$). When $J_1$ exists, $A \cap J_1 \subset A \setminus (p - \eta, p + \eta)$ is finite by the finiteness shown above. Since $f$ is continuous on $[a, b] \setminus A$, $f$ is continuous at every point of $J_1 \setminus A$, and since $\alpha$ is continuous on $A$, $\alpha$ is continuous at every point of $A \cap J_1$. Moreover $f$ is bounded on $J_1$ and $\alpha$ is monotonically increasing on $J_1$, being restrictions of the bounded $f$ and the monotonically increasing $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Hence, taking $A \cap J_1$ as the exceptional set, all the hypotheses of Theorem 2.32 are met on $J_1$. If $A \cap J_1 = \emptyset$, then $f$ is continuous on all of $J_1$, so by Theorem 2.26, $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $J_1$; if $A \cap J_1 \neq \emptyset$, applying Theorem 2.32 with $J_1$ in place of $[a,b]$ and $A \cap J_1$ in place of $\{c_1, \ldots, c_k\}$ gives the same conclusion. In either case $f$ is integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $J_1$, so by Theorem 2.19 there exists a partition $P_1$ of $J_1$ such that

$$U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Similarly, when $J_2$ exists, $A \cap J_2$ is finite (by the same argument), so by Theorem 2.26 or Theorem 2.32, $f$ is integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $J_2$, and by Theorem 2.19 there exists a partition $P_2$ of $J_2$ such that

$$U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Now form a partition $P$ of $[a, b]$ by combining $P_1$ (if it exists), the two endpoints $\max\{a, p-\eta\}$ and $\min\{b, p+\eta\}$ of $I$, and $P_2$ (if it exists). Since $J_1$, $I$, $J_2$ cover $[a, b]$ consecutively without overlap, $P$ is indeed a partition of $[a, b]$, and $U(P, f, \alpha)$ and $L(P, f, \alpha)$ decompose as the sum of the contributions over $J_1$, $I$, and $J_2$ respectively:

$$U(P, f, \alpha) = U(P_1, f, \alpha) + M_I \Delta\alpha_I + U(P_2, f, \alpha),$$
$$L(P, f, \alpha) = L(P_1, f, \alpha) + m_I \Delta\alpha_I + L(P_2, f, \alpha),$$

where $\Delta\alpha_I := \alpha(\min\{b, p+\eta\}) - \alpha(\max\{a, p-\eta\})$, and the corresponding term is taken to be $0$ if $J_1$ or $J_2$ does not exist. Thus

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) = \left[ U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) \right] + (M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I + \left[ U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) \right] < \varepsilon + (M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I + \varepsilon.$$

In Case a), $\Delta\alpha_I \le \alpha(b) - \alpha(a)$ and $M_I - m_I \le \varepsilon$ by (a), so $(M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I \le \varepsilon(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a))$. In Case b), $M_I - m_I \le 2M$ and $\Delta\alpha_I < \varepsilon$ by (b), so $(M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I < 2M\varepsilon$. In either case,

$$(M_I - m_I)\Delta\alpha_I \le \varepsilon\left( \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 2M \right),$$

and thus

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon \left( 2 + \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 2M \right) = \varepsilon C,$$

where $C := 2 + \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 2M \ge 0$ is a fixed constant independent of $\varepsilon$ and of the choice of partition $P$. This is exactly the situation of Exercise 2.33: given any $\varepsilon' > 0$, starting with $\varepsilon := \varepsilon'/(C+1)$ and repeating the entire construction above (i.e. the choice of $\eta$, $I$, $P_1$, $P_2$, and $P$) yields a partition $P$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon C = \frac{C}{C+1}\varepsilon' < \varepsilon'.$$

Since $\varepsilon' > 0$ is arbitrary, by Theorem 2.19, $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

English

Let $f$ be a Riemann-Stieltjes integrable function with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Assume that there exist $m \le M$ such that

$$m \le f(x) \le M \qquad \forall x \in [a, b] \tag{2.32}$$

and continuous function $\phi$ on $[m, M]$. Then the composition function $h(x) := \phi(f(x))$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $\phi$ is continuous on $[m, M]$ and $[m, M]$ is compact, $\phi$ is uniformly continuous on $[m, M]$. Thus there exists a $\delta > 0$ such that

$$\delta < \varepsilon \tag{2.33}$$

and

$$|\phi(s) - \phi(t)| < \varepsilon \qquad \forall s, t \in [m, M] \text{ satisfying } |s - t| < \delta. \tag{2.34}$$

Since $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable function with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, there exists a partition $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \delta^2. \tag{2.35}$$

For all $i = 1, \ldots, n$, put

$$M_i^{f} = \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x), \quad m_i^{f} = \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x), \quad M_i^{h} = \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} h(x),$$

and $m_i^{h} = \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} h(x)$. We write $i \in B_1$ iff $M_i^{f} - m_i^{f} < \delta$. Then setting $B_2 = \{1, 2, \ldots, n\} \setminus B_1$, we have

$$\{1, 2, \ldots, n\} = B_1 \cup B_2.$$

If $i \in B_1$, then for all $x, y \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$

$$|f(x) - f(y)| \le \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x) - \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x) = M_i^{f} - m_i^{f} < \delta$$

and thus by (2.32) and (2.34),

$$h(x) - h(y) \le |h(x) - h(y)| = |\phi(f(x)) - \phi(f(y))| < \varepsilon,$$

which leads to

$$M_i^{h} - m_i^{h} \le \varepsilon. \tag{2.36}$$

On the other hand, if $i \in B_2$, then $M_i^{f} - m_i^{f} \ge \delta$ and thus by (2.35)

$$\begin{aligned} \delta \sum_{i \in B_2} \Delta\alpha_i \le \sum_{i \in B_2} \left( M_i^{f} - m_i^{f} \right) \Delta\alpha_i &\le \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left( M_i^{f} - m_i^{f} \right) \Delta\alpha_i \\ &= U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \delta^2, \end{aligned}$$

which obviously implies

$$\sum_{i \in B_2} \Delta\alpha_i < \delta. \tag{2.37}$$

Thus defining

$$K := \sup_{m \le t \le M} |\phi(t)|,$$

and applying (2.36), (2.37), and (2.33), we have

$$\begin{aligned} U(P, h, \alpha) - L(P, h, \alpha) &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} (M_i^{h} - m_i^{h})\Delta\alpha_i \\ &= \sum_{i \in B_1} (M_i^{h} - m_i^{h})\Delta\alpha_i + \sum_{i \in B_2} (M_i^{h} - m_i^{h})\Delta\alpha_i \\ &\le \varepsilon \sum_{i \in B_1} \Delta\alpha_i + 2K \sum_{i \in B_2} \Delta\alpha_i \\ &\le \varepsilon \sum_{i=1}^{n} \Delta\alpha_i + 2K\delta \\ &\le \varepsilon \left( \alpha(b) - \alpha(a) + 2K \right). \end{aligned}$$

Since $\varepsilon > 0$ is an arbitrary positive constant, the theorem is proved.

다섯째로 (v)를 증명한다. $m := \inf A$라 두자. $c > 0$이므로 $a \ge m$이면 $ca \ge cm$이고, 따라서 $cm$은 $cA$의 하계이다. $\varepsilon > 0$이 주어졌다고 하자. $\varepsilon/c > 0$이므로 주의 1.49에 의해 어떤 $y \in A$가 존재하여 $y < m + \varepsilon/c$이고, 양변에 $c$를 곱하면 $cy < cm + \varepsilon$을 얻으며 $cy \in cA$이다. 따라서

$$\inf(cA) = cm = c \inf A.$$

마지막으로 (vi)을 증명한다. $s := \sup A$라 두자. $d < 0$이므로 $a \le s$이면 $da \ge ds$이고(음수를 곱하면 부등호가 뒤집힌다), 따라서 $ds$는 $dA$의 하계이다. $\varepsilon > 0$이 주어졌다고 하자. $-d > 0$이므로 $\varepsilon/(-d) > 0$이고, 주의 1.49에 의해 어떤 $y \in A$가 존재하여 $s - \varepsilon/(-d) < y$이다. $d < 0$이므로 양변에 $d$를 곱하면 부등호가 뒤집혀

$$dy < d\left( s - \frac{\varepsilon}{-d} \right) = ds - d \cdot \frac{\varepsilon}{-d} = ds + \varepsilon$$

를 얻고, $dy \in dA$이다.

$$\inf(dA) = ds = d \sup A.$$
English

Let $A \subset \mathbb{R}$, $b \in \mathbb{R}$, $c > 0$, and $d < 0$. Prove the followings:

  1. $$\sup(A + b) = \sup A + b,$$

    where $A + b := \{a + b : a \in A\}$.

  2. $$\sup(cA) = c \sup A,$$

    where $cA := \{ca : a \in A\}$.

  3. $$\sup(dA) = d \inf A.$$
  4. $$\inf(A + b) = \inf A + b.$$
  5. $$\inf(cA) = c \inf A.$$
  6. $$\inf(dA) = d \sup A.$$

Assume $A$ is nonempty and bounded both above and below, so that all the suprema and infima below exist in $\mathbb{R}$ (Remark 1.49). We first prove (i). Put $s := \sup A$. For all $a \in A$, $a \le s$, so $a + b \le s + b$, and thus $s + b$ is an upper bound of $A + b$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $s = \sup A$, by Remark 1.49 there exists a $y \in A$ such that $s - \varepsilon < y$, and thus $y + b \in A + b$ and $(s + b) - \varepsilon < y + b$. Since $\varepsilon > 0$ is arbitrary, by the $\varepsilon$-characterization of the supremum (Remark 1.49),

$$\sup(A + b) = s + b = \sup A + b.$$

Second, we prove (ii). Put $s := \sup A$. Since $c > 0$, $a \le s$ implies $ca \le cs$ for all $a \in A$, so $cs$ is an upper bound of $cA$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $\varepsilon/c > 0$, by Remark 1.49 there exists a $y \in A$ such that $s - \varepsilon/c < y$. Since $c > 0$, multiplying both sides by $c$ does not reverse the inequality, so we obtain $cs - \varepsilon < cy$, and $cy \in cA$. Therefore, by the $\varepsilon$-characterization of the supremum,

$$\sup(cA) = cs = c \sup A.$$

Third, we prove (iii). Put $m := \inf A$. Since $d < 0$, $a \ge m$ implies $da \le dm$ for all $a \in A$ (multiplying by a negative number reverses the inequality), so $dm$ is an upper bound of $dA$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $-d > 0$, $\varepsilon/(-d) > 0$, and by Remark 1.49 there exists a $y \in A$ such that $y < m + \varepsilon/(-d)$. Since $d < 0$, multiplying both sides by $d$ reverses the inequality, giving

$$dy > d\left( m + \frac{\varepsilon}{-d} \right) = dm + d \cdot \frac{\varepsilon}{-d} = dm - \varepsilon,$$

and $dy \in dA$. Thus $dm - \varepsilon < dy$, so by the $\varepsilon$-characterization of the supremum,

$$\sup(dA) = dm = d \inf A.$$

Fourth, we prove (iv). Put $m := \inf A$. For all $a \in A$, $a \ge m$, so $a + b \ge m + b$, and thus $m + b$ is a lower bound of $A + b$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. By Remark 1.49 there exists a $y \in A$ such that $y < m + \varepsilon$, and thus $y + b \in A + b$ and $y + b < (m + b) + \varepsilon$. Therefore, by the $\varepsilon$-characterization of the infimum,

$$\inf(A + b) = m + b = \inf A + b.$$

Fifth, we prove (v). Put $m := \inf A$. Since $c > 0$, $a \ge m$ implies $ca \ge cm$, so $cm$ is a lower bound of $cA$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $\varepsilon/c > 0$, by Remark 1.49 there exists a $y \in A$ such that $y < m + \varepsilon/c$, and multiplying both sides by $c$ gives $cy < cm + \varepsilon$, with $cy \in cA$. Therefore,

$$\inf(cA) = cm = c \inf A.$$

Finally, we prove (vi). Put $s := \sup A$. Since $d < 0$, $a \le s$ implies $da \ge ds$ (multiplying by a negative number reverses the inequality), so $ds$ is a lower bound of $dA$. Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $-d > 0$, $\varepsilon/(-d) > 0$, and by Remark 1.49 there exists a $y \in A$ such that $s - \varepsilon/(-d) < y$. Since $d < 0$, multiplying both sides by $d$ reverses the inequality, giving

$$dy < d\left( s - \frac{\varepsilon}{-d} \right) = ds - d \cdot \frac{\varepsilon}{-d} = ds + \varepsilon,$$

and $dy \in dA$. Thus $dy < ds + \varepsilon$, so by the $\varepsilon$-characterization of the infimum,

$$\inf(dA) = ds = d \sup A.$$

English

Let $f$, $f_1$, $f_2$ be bounded functions on $[a, b]$ and $\alpha$ be a monotonically increasing function on $[a, b]$.

  1. If $f_1$ and $f_2$ are Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, then $f_1 + f_2$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$ and

    $$\int_a^b (f_1 + f_2) d\alpha = \int_a^b f_1 d\alpha + \int_a^b f_2 d\alpha. \tag{2.38}$$
  2. If $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, then for any constant $c \in \mathbb{R}$, $cf$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$ and

    $$\int_a^b cf d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$
  3. If $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$ and $c \in (a, b)$, then $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, c]$, Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[c, b]$, and

    $$\int_a^c f d\alpha + \int_c^b f d\alpha = \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$
  4. If $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$ and $\sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x)| \le M$ for some positive constant $M > 0$, then

    $$\left| \int_a^b f d\alpha \right| \le M[\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)].$$
  5. If $f_1$ and $f_2$ are Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$ and $f_1(x) \le f_2(x)$ for all $x \in [a, b]$, then

    $$\int_a^b f_1 d\alpha \le \int_a^b f_2 d\alpha.$$

We first prove (i). Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Then since $f_1$ and $f_2$ are Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, there exist partitions $P_1$ and $P_2$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P_1, f_1, \alpha) - L(P_1, f_1, \alpha) < \frac{\varepsilon}{2}$$

and

$$U(P_2, f_2, \alpha) - L(P_2, f_2, \alpha) < \frac{\varepsilon}{2}.$$

Denote the common refinement of $P_1$ and $P_2$ by $P^*$. Then

$$U(P^*, f_1, \alpha) - L(P^*, f_1, \alpha) \le U(P_1, f_1, \alpha) - L(P_1, f_1, \alpha) < \frac{\varepsilon}{2} \tag{2.39}$$

and

$$U(P^*, f_2, \alpha) - L(P^*, f_2, \alpha) \le U(P_2, f_2, \alpha) - L(P_2, f_2, \alpha) < \frac{\varepsilon}{2}. \tag{2.40}$$

Put

$$P^* = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$$

and set for $i = 1, \ldots, n$,

$$M_i^{f_1} = \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_1(x), \quad M_i^{f_2} = \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_2(x),$$
$$m_i^{f_1} = \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_1(x), \quad m_i^{f_2} = \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_2(x),$$
$$M_i^{f_1+f_2} = \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (f_1(x) + f_2(x)), \quad m_i^{f_1+f_2} = \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} (f_1(x) + f_2(x)).$$

Then

$$M_i^{f_1+f_2} \le M_i^{f_1} + M_i^{f_2}, \qquad m_i^{f_1} + m_i^{f_2} \le m_i^{f_1+f_2}. \tag{2.41}$$

Thus by (2.39) and (2.40),

$$\begin{aligned} &U(P^*, f_1 + f_2, \alpha) - L(P^*, f_1 + f_2, \alpha) \\ &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} (M_i^{f_1+f_2} - m_i^{f_1+f_2})\Delta\alpha_i \\ &\le \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left( M_i^{f_1} + M_i^{f_2} - (m_i^{f_1} + m_i^{f_2}) \right) \Delta\alpha_i \\ &= \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left( M_i^{f_1} - m_i^{f_1} \right) \Delta\alpha_i + \sum_{i=1}^{n} \left( M_i^{f_2} - m_i^{f_2} \right) \Delta\alpha_i \\ &= U(P^*, f_1, \alpha) - L(P^*, f_1, \alpha) + U(P^*, f_2, \alpha) - L(P^*, f_2, \alpha) < \varepsilon. \end{aligned}$$

Therefore, $f_1 + f_2$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Next we prove (2.38). Recalling (2.41), for all partition $P_1$ and $P_2$ of $[a, b]$ and their refinement $P^*$, we have

$$\begin{aligned} \int_a^b (f_1 + f_2) d\alpha = \overline{\int_a^b} (f_1 + f_2) d\alpha &\le U(P^*, f_1 + f_2, \alpha) \le U(P^*, f_1, \alpha) + U(P^*, f_2, \alpha) \\ &\le U(P_1, f_1, \alpha) + U(P_2, f_2, \alpha) \end{aligned}$$

and

$$\begin{aligned} L(P_1, f_1, \alpha) + L(P_2, f_2, \alpha) &\le L(P^*, f_1, \alpha) + L(P^*, f_2, \alpha) \\ &\le L(P^*, f_1 + f_2, \alpha) \\ &\le \underline{\int_a^b} (f_1 + f_2) d\alpha = \int_a^b (f_1 + f_2) d\alpha. \end{aligned}$$

Therefore,

$$\begin{aligned} \int_a^b (f_1 + f_2) d\alpha &\le \inf_{P_1} U(P_1, f_1, \alpha) + \inf_{P_2} U(P_2, f_2, \alpha) \\ &= \overline{\int_a^b} f_1 d\alpha + \overline{\int_a^b} f_2 d\alpha = \int_a^b f_1 d\alpha + \int_a^b f_2 d\alpha \end{aligned}$$

and

$$\begin{aligned} \int_a^b f_1 d\alpha + \int_a^b f_2 d\alpha = \underline{\int_a^b} f_1 d\alpha + \underline{\int_a^b} f_2 d\alpha &= \sup_{P_1} L(P_1, f_1, \alpha) + \sup_{P_2} L(P_2, f_2, \alpha) \\ &\le \int_a^b (f_1 + f_2) d\alpha. \end{aligned}$$

Second, we prove (ii). If $c = 0$, then the statement is obvious. We consider the case $c > 0$ first. Then for any partition $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ and $i = 1, \ldots, n$,

$$\sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} cf(x) = c \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x)$$

and

$$\inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} cf(x) = c \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x).$$

Thus

$$\overline{\int_a^b} cf d\alpha = c \overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha$$

and

$$\underline{\int_a^b} cf d\alpha = c \underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

On the other hand, if $c < 0$, then for any partition $P = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$ and $i = 1, \ldots, n$,

$$\sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} cf(x) = c \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x)$$

and

$$\inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} cf(x) = c \sup_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f(x).$$

Thus

$$\overline{\int_a^b} cf d\alpha = c \underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha$$

and

$$\underline{\int_a^b} cf d\alpha = c \overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

We left the proof of (iii), (iv), and (v) as an exercise.

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$U(P', f, \alpha) - L(P', f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$P' = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$이라 두면 $c \in P'$이므로 $c = x_j$인 $j$가 존재한다. $c \in (a, b)$이므로 $x_0 = a < c < b = x_n$이고, 따라서 $j \in \{1, \ldots, n-1\}$이다(즉 아래의 $P_1$과 $P_2$는 각각 두 개 이상의 점을 가지므로 실제로 $[a, c]$와 $[c, b]$의 분할이 된다).

$$P_1 := \{x_0, \ldots, x_j\}, \qquad P_2 := \{x_j, \ldots, x_n\}.$$

$$U(P', f, \alpha) = U(P_1, f, \alpha) + U(P_2, f, \alpha), \qquad L(P', f, \alpha) = L(P_1, f, \alpha) + L(P_2, f, \alpha)$$

따라서

$$\left[ U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) \right] + \left[ U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) \right] = U(P', f, \alpha) - L(P', f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon, \qquad U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$f$가 $[a, c]$, $[c, b]$, $[a, b]$ 모두에서 $\alpha$에 관하여 적분가능하므로, (2.15)에 의해

$$L(P_1, f, \alpha) \le \int_a^c f d\alpha \le U(P_1, f, \alpha), \qquad L(P_2, f, \alpha) \le \int_c^b f d\alpha \le U(P_2, f, \alpha)$$

$$L(P', f, \alpha) = L(P_1, f, \alpha) + L(P_2, f, \alpha) \le \int_a^c f d\alpha + \int_c^b f d\alpha \le U(P_1, f, \alpha) + U(P_2, f, \alpha) = U(P', f, \alpha)$$

$$L(P', f, \alpha) \le \int_a^b f d\alpha \le U(P', f, \alpha)$$

$$\left| \int_a^c f d\alpha + \int_c^b f d\alpha - \int_a^b f d\alpha \right| \le U(P', f, \alpha) - L(P', f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

$$\int_a^c f d\alpha + \int_c^b f d\alpha = \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

임의의 $[a, b]$의 분할 $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$과 각 $i = 1, \ldots, n$에 대해, 모든 $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$에서 $f_1(x) \le f_2(x)$이므로

$$\inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_1(x) \le \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_2(x)$$

즉 $m_i^{f_1} \le m_i^{f_2}$이다. $\Delta\alpha_i \ge 0$이므로

$$L(P, f_1, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i^{f_1} \Delta\alpha_i \le \sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i^{f_2} \Delta\alpha_i = L(P, f_2, \alpha)$$

$$\underline{\int_a^b} f_1 d\alpha = \sup_P L(P, f_1, \alpha) \le \sup_P L(P, f_2, \alpha) = \underline{\int_a^b} f_2 d\alpha.$$

$$\int_a^b f_1 d\alpha = \underline{\int_a^b} f_1 d\alpha \le \underline{\int_a^b} f_2 d\alpha = \int_a^b f_2 d\alpha.$$

$\sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x)| \le M$이므로

$$-M \le f(x) \le M \qquad \forall x \in [a, b]$$

상수함수 $g \equiv M$을 생각하면, $[a, b]$의 임의의 분할 $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$에 대해 모든 $i$에서 $\sup_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} g = \inf_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} g = M$이므로

$$U(P, g, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M \Delta\alpha_i = M \sum_{i=1}^{n} \Delta\alpha_i = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) = L(P, g, \alpha)$$

이다(합이 망원급수를 이루므로 $\sum_{i=1}^{n} \Delta\alpha_i = \alpha(b) - \alpha(a)$이다). 즉 모든 분할 $P$에 대해 $U(P, g, \alpha) = L(P, g, \alpha) = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a))$이므로, 정리 2.19에 의해 $g$는 $[a, b]$에서 $\alpha$에 관하여 적분가능하고, 상적분 $\inf_P U(P, g, \alpha)$를 계산하면 ($g$의 적분을 $\int_a^b M d\alpha$로 쓸 때)

$$\int_a^b M d\alpha = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)).$$

$$\int_a^b (-M) d\alpha = -M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)).$$

이제 $-M \le f(x)$가 모든 $x \in [a, b]$에서 성립하므로, (v)에 의해

$$-M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) = \int_a^b (-M) d\alpha \le \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

또한 $f(x) \le M$이 모든 $x \in [a, b]$에서 성립하므로, (v)에 의해

$$\int_a^b f d\alpha \le \int_a^b M d\alpha = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)).$$

따라서

$$-M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) \le \int_a^b f d\alpha \le M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a))$$

이고 $\alpha(b) - \alpha(a) \ge 0$이므로, 이는 정확히

$$\left| \int_a^b f d\alpha \right| \le M[\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)]$$

English

Prove (iii)-(v) in Theorem 2.37.

We first prove (iii). Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, by Theorem 2.19 there exists a partition $P$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Put $P' := P \cup \{c\}$. Then $P'$ is a refinement of $P$, so by Theorem 2.20(i),

$$U(P', f, \alpha) - L(P', f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Put $P' = \{x_0, x_1, \ldots, x_n\}$; since $c \in P'$, there exists $j$ such that $c = x_j$. As $c \in (a, b)$ we have $x_0 = a < c < b = x_n$, hence $j \in \{1, \ldots, n-1\}$ (so that $P_1$ and $P_2$ below each contain at least two points and are therefore genuine partitions of $[a, c]$ and $[c, b]$). Define

$$P_1 := \{x_0, \ldots, x_j\}, \qquad P_2 := \{x_j, \ldots, x_n\}.$$

Then $P_1$ is a partition of $[a, c]$ and $P_2$ is a partition of $[c, b]$. Since $U(P', f, \alpha)$ and $L(P', f, \alpha)$ are sums over the subintervals of $P'$, and the subintervals of $P'$ split exactly, at the boundary $x_j = c$, into those forming $P_1$ and those forming $P_2$, we have

$$U(P', f, \alpha) = U(P_1, f, \alpha) + U(P_2, f, \alpha), \qquad L(P', f, \alpha) = L(P_1, f, \alpha) + L(P_2, f, \alpha).$$

Thus

$$\left[ U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) \right] + \left[ U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) \right] = U(P', f, \alpha) - L(P', f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

By (2.8), both terms on the left-hand side are nonnegative, so each is individually less than $\varepsilon$:

$$U(P_1, f, \alpha) - L(P_1, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon, \qquad U(P_2, f, \alpha) - L(P_2, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Since $\varepsilon > 0$ is arbitrary, applying Theorem 2.19 on $[a, c]$ and on $[c, b]$ respectively shows that $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, c]$ and on $[c, b]$.

Now we prove the identity. Since $f$ is integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, c]$, $[c, b]$, and $[a, b]$, by (2.15),

$$L(P_1, f, \alpha) \le \int_a^c f d\alpha \le U(P_1, f, \alpha), \qquad L(P_2, f, \alpha) \le \int_c^b f d\alpha \le U(P_2, f, \alpha),$$

and adding these two inequalities gives

$$L(P', f, \alpha) = L(P_1, f, \alpha) + L(P_2, f, \alpha) \le \int_a^c f d\alpha + \int_c^b f d\alpha \le U(P_1, f, \alpha) + U(P_2, f, \alpha) = U(P', f, \alpha).$$

Also, applying (2.15) directly to $P'$ and $[a, b]$,

$$L(P', f, \alpha) \le \int_a^b f d\alpha \le U(P', f, \alpha).$$

Combining the two chains of inequalities above,

$$\left| \int_a^c f d\alpha + \int_c^b f d\alpha - \int_a^b f d\alpha \right| \le U(P', f, \alpha) - L(P', f, \alpha) < \varepsilon.$$

Since $\varepsilon > 0$ is arbitrary,

$$\int_a^c f d\alpha + \int_c^b f d\alpha = \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

Next, since the proof of (iv) requires (v), we prove (v) first. For any partition $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$ of $[a, b]$ and each $i = 1, \ldots, n$, since $f_1(x) \le f_2(x)$ for all $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$,

$$\inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_1(x) \le \inf_{x_{i-1} \le x \le x_i} f_2(x)$$

(since $\inf_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} f_1$ is a lower bound of $f_1$ on $[x_{i-1}, x_i]$, and $f_1(x) \le f_2(x)$ for all $x \in [x_{i-1}, x_i]$, it is also a lower bound of $f_2$ on $[x_{i-1}, x_i]$, hence at most $\inf_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} f_2$). That is, $m_i^{f_1} \le m_i^{f_2}$. Since $\Delta\alpha_i \ge 0$,

$$L(P, f_1, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i^{f_1} \Delta\alpha_i \le \sum_{i=1}^{n} m_i^{f_2} \Delta\alpha_i = L(P, f_2, \alpha),$$

and this holds for every partition $P$ of $[a, b]$. Thus the supremum of the left-hand side is at most the supremum of the right-hand side, so

$$\underline{\int_a^b} f_1 d\alpha = \sup_P L(P, f_1, \alpha) \le \sup_P L(P, f_2, \alpha) = \underline{\int_a^b} f_2 d\alpha.$$

Since both $f_1$ and $f_2$ are integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$,

$$\int_a^b f_1 d\alpha = \underline{\int_a^b} f_1 d\alpha \le \underline{\int_a^b} f_2 d\alpha = \int_a^b f_2 d\alpha.$$

Finally, we prove (iv). Since $\sup_{x \in [a,b]} |f(x)| \le M$,

$$-M \le f(x) \le M \qquad \forall x \in [a, b].$$

Consider the constant function $g \equiv M$. For any partition $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$ of $[a, b]$, since $\sup_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} g = \inf_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} g = M$ for every $i$,

$$U(P, g, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M \Delta\alpha_i = M \sum_{i=1}^{n} \Delta\alpha_i = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) = L(P, g, \alpha)$$

(the sum telescopes, so $\sum_{i=1}^{n} \Delta\alpha_i = \alpha(b) - \alpha(a)$). That is, $U(P, g, \alpha) = L(P, g, \alpha) = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a))$ for every partition $P$, so by Theorem 2.19, $g$ is integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, and computing the upper integral $\inf_P U(P, g, \alpha)$ gives (writing $\int_a^b M d\alpha$ for the integral of $g$)

$$\int_a^b M d\alpha = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)).$$

In the same way,

$$\int_a^b (-M) d\alpha = -M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)).$$

Now, since $-M \le f(x)$ for all $x \in [a, b]$, by (v),

$$-M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) = \int_a^b (-M) d\alpha \le \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

Also, since $f(x) \le M$ for all $x \in [a, b]$, by (v),

$$\int_a^b f d\alpha \le \int_a^b M d\alpha = M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)).$$

Therefore

$$-M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)) \le \int_a^b f d\alpha \le M(\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)),$$

and since $\alpha(b) - \alpha(a) \ge 0$, this is exactly

$$\left| \int_a^b f d\alpha \right| \le M[\alpha(b) - \alpha(a)].$$

$\alpha_1$과 $\alpha_2$가 $[a, b]$에서 단조증가하므로, $x, y \in [a, b]$이고 $x < y$이면 $\alpha_1(x) \le \alpha_1(y)$이고 $\alpha_2(x) \le \alpha_2(y)$이며, 따라서 $(\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(x) \le (\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(y)$이다. $[a, b]$의 분할 $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$에 대해 각 $i = 1, \ldots, n$마다

$$\Delta(\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)_i = (\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(x_i) - (\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(x_{i-1}) = \left[ \alpha_1(x_i) - \alpha_1(x_{i-1}) \right] + \left[ \alpha_2(x_i) - \alpha_2(x_{i-1}) \right] = \Delta\alpha_{1,i} + \Delta\alpha_{2,i}$$

$$U(P, f, \alpha_1 + \alpha_2) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta(\alpha_1+\alpha_2)_i = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_{1,i} + \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_{2,i} = U(P, f, \alpha_1) + U(P, f, \alpha_2)$$

$$U(P_1, f, \alpha_1) - L(P_1, f, \alpha_1) < \varepsilon/2.$$

$$U(P_2, f, \alpha_2) - L(P_2, f, \alpha_2) < \varepsilon/2.$$

$$U(P^*, f, \alpha_1) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_1) \le U(P_1, f, \alpha_1) - L(P_1, f, \alpha_1) < \varepsilon/2$$

$$U(P^*, f, \alpha_2) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_2) \le U(P_2, f, \alpha_2) - L(P_2, f, \alpha_2) < \varepsilon/2$$

$$U(P^*, f, \alpha_1+\alpha_2) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_1+\alpha_2) = \left[ U(P^*, f, \alpha_1) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_1) \right] + \left[ U(P^*, f, \alpha_2) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_2) \right] < \varepsilon.$$

$c > 0$이고 $\alpha$가 $[a, b]$에서 단조증가하므로, $x, y \in [a, b]$이고 $x < y$이면 $\alpha(x) \le \alpha(y)$이고 $c > 0$이므로 $c\alpha(x) \le c\alpha(y)$이다. $[a, b]$의 분할 $P$에 대해 각 $i$마다

$$\Delta(c\alpha)_i = c\alpha(x_i) - c\alpha(x_{i-1}) = c\Delta\alpha_i$$

$$U(P, f, c\alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \cdot c\Delta\alpha_i = c \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_i = cU(P, f, \alpha)$$

이고, 마찬가지로 $L(P, f, c\alpha) = cL(P, f, \alpha)$이다.

$f$가 $[a, b]$에서 $\alpha$에 관하여 적분가능하므로, 정리 2.19를 오차 $\varepsilon/c > 0$에 적용하면 다음을 만족하는 $[a, b]$의 분할 $P$가 존재한다.

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon/c.$$

따라서

$$U(P, f, c\alpha) - L(P, f, c\alpha) = c \left[ U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) \right] < c \cdot \varepsilon/c = \varepsilon.$$

$$\overline{\int_a^b} f d(c\alpha) = \inf_P U(P, f, c\alpha) = \inf_P \left( cU(P, f, \alpha) \right) = c \inf_P U(P, f, \alpha) = c \overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha$$

$$\underline{\int_a^b} f d(c\alpha) = \sup_P L(P, f, c\alpha) = \sup_P \left( cL(P, f, \alpha) \right) = c \sup_P L(P, f, \alpha) = c \underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha$$

$$\int_a^b f d(c\alpha) = c \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

Prove Theorem 2.40.

We first prove (i). Since $\alpha_1$ and $\alpha_2$ are monotonically increasing on $[a, b]$, if $x, y \in [a, b]$ and $x < y$, then $\alpha_1(x) \le \alpha_1(y)$ and $\alpha_2(x) \le \alpha_2(y)$, so $(\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(x) \le (\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(y)$. That is, $\alpha_1 + \alpha_2$ is also monotonically increasing on $[a, b]$. For a partition $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$ of $[a, b]$ and each $i = 1, \ldots, n$,

$$\Delta(\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)_i = (\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(x_i) - (\alpha_1 + \alpha_2)(x_{i-1}) = \left[ \alpha_1(x_i) - \alpha_1(x_{i-1}) \right] + \left[ \alpha_2(x_i) - \alpha_2(x_{i-1}) \right] = \Delta\alpha_{1,i} + \Delta\alpha_{2,i}.$$

Noting that $M_i := \sup_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} f$ and $m_i := \inf_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} f$ depend only on $f$, not on $\alpha$,

$$U(P, f, \alpha_1 + \alpha_2) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta(\alpha_1+\alpha_2)_i = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_{1,i} + \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_{2,i} = U(P, f, \alpha_1) + U(P, f, \alpha_2)$$

and similarly

$$L(P, f, \alpha_1 + \alpha_2) = L(P, f, \alpha_1) + L(P, f, \alpha_2).$$

These two identities hold for every partition $P$ of $[a, b]$.

Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $f$ is integrable with respect to $\alpha_1$ on $[a, b]$, by Theorem 2.19 there exists a partition $P_1$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P_1, f, \alpha_1) - L(P_1, f, \alpha_1) < \varepsilon/2.$$

Similarly, since $f$ is integrable with respect to $\alpha_2$ on $[a, b]$, there exists a partition $P_2$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P_2, f, \alpha_2) - L(P_2, f, \alpha_2) < \varepsilon/2.$$

Let $P^*$ be the common refinement of $P_1$ and $P_2$ (Definition 2.14). Since $P^*$ is a refinement of $P_1$, by Theorem 2.15 and Corollary 2.16,

$$U(P^*, f, \alpha_1) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_1) \le U(P_1, f, \alpha_1) - L(P_1, f, \alpha_1) < \varepsilon/2,$$

and since $P^*$ is a refinement of $P_2$, similarly

$$U(P^*, f, \alpha_2) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_2) \le U(P_2, f, \alpha_2) - L(P_2, f, \alpha_2) < \varepsilon/2.$$

Therefore, by the identity shown above,

$$U(P^*, f, \alpha_1+\alpha_2) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_1+\alpha_2) = \left[ U(P^*, f, \alpha_1) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_1) \right] + \left[ U(P^*, f, \alpha_2) - L(P^*, f, \alpha_2) \right] < \varepsilon.$$

By Theorem 2.19, $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha_1 + \alpha_2$ on $[a, b]$.

Now we prove the value identity. Since the identity above holds for every partition of $[a, b]$, not just $P^*$, for any partitions $P_1$, $P_2$ of $[a, b]$ and their common refinement $P^*$ (following the exact pattern of the proof of Theorem 2.37(i)),

$$\begin{aligned} \int_a^b f d(\alpha_1+\alpha_2) = \overline{\int_a^b} f d(\alpha_1+\alpha_2) &\le U(P^*, f, \alpha_1+\alpha_2) = U(P^*, f, \alpha_1) + U(P^*, f, \alpha_2) \\ &\le U(P_1, f, \alpha_1) + U(P_2, f, \alpha_2) \end{aligned}$$

and

$$\begin{aligned} L(P_1, f, \alpha_1) + L(P_2, f, \alpha_2) &\le L(P^*, f, \alpha_1) + L(P^*, f, \alpha_2) = L(P^*, f, \alpha_1+\alpha_2) \\ &\le \underline{\int_a^b} f d(\alpha_1+\alpha_2) = \int_a^b f d(\alpha_1+\alpha_2). \end{aligned}$$

Therefore

$$\int_a^b f d(\alpha_1+\alpha_2) \le \inf_{P_1} U(P_1, f, \alpha_1) + \inf_{P_2} U(P_2, f, \alpha_2) = \overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha_1 + \overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha_2 = \int_a^b f d\alpha_1 + \int_a^b f d\alpha_2$$

and

$$\int_a^b f d\alpha_1 + \int_a^b f d\alpha_2 = \underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha_1 + \underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha_2 = \sup_{P_1} L(P_1, f, \alpha_1) + \sup_{P_2} L(P_2, f, \alpha_2) \le \int_a^b f d(\alpha_1+\alpha_2).$$

Combining these two inequalities,

$$\int_a^b f d(\alpha_1+\alpha_2) = \int_a^b f d\alpha_1 + \int_a^b f d\alpha_2.$$

Next we prove (ii). Since $c > 0$ and $\alpha$ is monotonically increasing on $[a, b]$, if $x, y \in [a, b]$ and $x < y$, then $\alpha(x) \le \alpha(y)$, and since $c > 0$, $c\alpha(x) \le c\alpha(y)$. That is, $c\alpha$ is also monotonically increasing on $[a, b]$. For a partition $P$ of $[a, b]$ and each $i$,

$$\Delta(c\alpha)_i = c\alpha(x_i) - c\alpha(x_{i-1}) = c\Delta\alpha_i,$$

so since $c > 0$ can be factored out of the sum,

$$U(P, f, c\alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \cdot c\Delta\alpha_i = c \sum_{i=1}^{n} M_i \Delta\alpha_i = cU(P, f, \alpha),$$

and similarly $L(P, f, c\alpha) = cL(P, f, \alpha)$.

Let $\varepsilon > 0$ be given. Since $f$ is integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$, applying Theorem 2.19 with tolerance $\varepsilon/c > 0$, there exists a partition $P$ of $[a, b]$ such that

$$U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) < \varepsilon/c.$$

Thus

$$U(P, f, c\alpha) - L(P, f, c\alpha) = c \left[ U(P, f, \alpha) - L(P, f, \alpha) \right] < c \cdot \varepsilon/c = \varepsilon.$$

By Theorem 2.19, $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $c\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

We show the value identity. Since $c > 0$, by Exercise 2.36(v),

$$\overline{\int_a^b} f d(c\alpha) = \inf_P U(P, f, c\alpha) = \inf_P \left( cU(P, f, \alpha) \right) = c \inf_P U(P, f, \alpha) = c \overline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha,$$

and by Exercise 2.36(ii),

$$\underline{\int_a^b} f d(c\alpha) = \sup_P L(P, f, c\alpha) = \sup_P \left( cL(P, f, \alpha) \right) = c \sup_P L(P, f, \alpha) = c \underline{\int_a^b} f d\alpha = c \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

Since both values equal $c\int_a^b f d\alpha$,

$$\int_a^b f d(c\alpha) = c \int_a^b f d\alpha.$$

    $$\left| \int_a^b f d\alpha \right| \le \int_a^b |f| d\alpha. \tag{2.42}$$

First we prove (i). By Theorem 2.37 (i) and (ii), $f+g$ and $f-g$ are Riemann-Stieltjes integrable functions with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Set $\phi(t) = t^2$. Then by Theorem 2.35, $\phi(f + g) = (f + g)^2$ and $\phi(f - g) = (f - g)^2$ are Riemann-Stieltjes integrable functions with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Thus by Theorem 2.37 (i) and (ii) again,

is a Riemann-Stieltjes integrable function with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Next we prove (ii). Set $\phi(t) = |t|$. Then Theorem 2.35 shows that $|f|$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Thus it only remains to show (2.42). Choose $c = 1$ or $c = -1$ so that

$[a, b] := [0, 1]$이고 $\alpha(x) := x$라 하자.

$$U(P, f, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} 1 \cdot \Delta x_i = x_n - x_0 = 1 = \sum_{i=1}^{n} 1 \cdot \Delta x_i = L(P, f, \alpha)$$

$$g(x) := \begin{cases} 1 & \text{if } x \text{ is an irrational number} \\ 0 & \text{if } x \text{ is a rational number} \end{cases}$$

$$U(P, g) = 1, \qquad L(P, g) = 0$$

이므로 $U(P, g) - L(P, g) = 1$이고, 이는 어떤 $\varepsilon \in (0, 1)$에 대해서도 $U(P,g) - L(P,g) < \varepsilon$을 만족하는 분할 $P$가 존재하지 않음을 뜻한다.

$$f(x)g(x) = 1 \cdot g(x) = g(x) \qquad \forall x \in [0, 1]$$

즉 $f$가 $[a, b]$에서 $\alpha$에 관하여 리만-스틸체스 적분가능하고 $g$가 $[a, b]$에서 유계이기만 하더라도, $fg$가 $[a, b]$에서 $\alpha$에 관하여 리만-스틸체스 적분가능할 필요는 없다.

English

Let $f$ and $g$ be bounded functions on $[a, b]$. Assume that $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$. Prove or disprove that $fg$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.

This statement is false. Let $[a, b] := [0, 1]$ and $\alpha(x) := x$. Then $\alpha$ is continuous and monotonically increasing on $[0, 1]$. Put $f \equiv 1$. Then $f$ is bounded, and for any partition $P = \{x_0, \ldots, x_n\}$ of $[0, 1]$, since $\sup_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} f = \inf_{[x_{i-1},x_i]} f = 1$ for every $i$,

$$U(P, f, \alpha) = \sum_{i=1}^{n} 1 \cdot \Delta x_i = x_n - x_0 = 1 = \sum_{i=1}^{n} 1 \cdot \Delta x_i = L(P, f, \alpha).$$

That is, $U = L$ for every partition, so by Theorem 2.19, $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[0, 1]$.

Now consider the function from Example 2.7,

$$g(x) := \begin{cases} 1 & \text{if } x \text{ is an irrational number} \\ 0 & \text{if } x \text{ is a rational number.} \end{cases}$$

Since the values of $g$ are only $0$ or $1$, $g$ is bounded on $[0, 1]$. As already shown in Example 2.7, for every partition $P$ of $[0, 1]$,

$$U(P, g) = 1, \qquad L(P, g) = 0,$$

so $U(P, g) - L(P, g) = 1$, which means that there is no partition $P$ satisfying $U(P,g) - L(P,g) < \varepsilon$ for any $\varepsilon \in (0, 1)$. Thus by Theorem 2.19, $g$ is not Riemann-integrable on $[0, 1]$, and by Remark 2.13 (i.e. since Riemann-Stieltjes integrability with respect to $\alpha(x) = x$ is equivalent to Riemann integrability), $g$ is also not Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[0, 1]$.

But

$$f(x)g(x) = 1 \cdot g(x) = g(x) \qquad \forall x \in [0, 1],$$

so $fg = g$, and hence $fg$ is not Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[0, 1]$. That is, even when $f$ is Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$ and $g$ is merely bounded on $[a, b]$, $fg$ need not be Riemann-Stieltjes integrable with respect to $\alpha$ on $[a, b]$.
