Wind measured 10 m above the surface over the San Francisco Bay area attaches a velocity vector to each point of the air, and the pattern it forms differs sharply from one time of day to another. Ocean currents off Nova Scotia and the airflow around a tilted airfoil are pictured the same way: one vector per point of the fluid.
A rule that attaches a velocity vector to every point of a region is called a velocity vector field. A different kind of field attaches a force vector to each point instead; fields of that kind are called force fields, and the gravitational field derived in Example 4 is the standard example.
Definition 1. Let $D$ be a region of the plane $\mathbb R^2$. A vector field on $\mathbb R^2$ is a function $\mathbf F$ that attaches to every point $(x,y)$ of $D$ a two-dimensional vector $\mathbf F(x,y)$.
So the inputs of $\mathbf F$ are points of a plane region while the outputs are vectors of $V_2$ — this is what separates a vector field from an ordinary function of two variables, whose outputs are numbers.
줄여서 $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$로 쓴다.
To see a vector field, draw the arrow standing for $\mathbf F(x,y)$ with its tail placed at the point $(x,y)$ itself. Doing that at every single point is out of the question, but a handful of representative points already gives a fair impression of $\mathbf F$.
Each value of $\mathbf F$ is a plane vector, so it splits into two component functions $P$ and $Q$:
written for short as $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$. Here $P$ and $Q$ are real-valued functions of two variables; to tell them apart from vector fields they are sometimes called scalar fields.
Definition 2. Let $E$ be a subset of $\mathbb R^3$. A vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ is a function $\mathbf F$ that attaches to every point $(x,y,z)$ of $E$ a three-dimensional vector $\mathbf F(x,y,z)$.
Written out in components, such a field reads
Continuity of a vector field is defined just as it was for the vector functions of Section 13.1, and one shows that $\mathbf F$ is continuous exactly when all three component functions $P$, $Q$, $R$ are continuous.
It is often convenient to identify the point $(x,y,z)$ with its position vector $\mathbf x=\langle x,y,z\rangle$ and to write $\mathbf F(\mathbf x)$ where $\mathbf F(x,y,z)$ was meant.
Read that way, a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ becomes a function that sends a vector $\mathbf x$ to a vector $\mathbf F(\mathbf x)$. Nothing about the field changes — only the notation does — but formulas such as (3) and (4) below become much shorter in this form.
Graphing software plots vector fields in two or three dimensions, and because it can place far more representative arrows than one can by hand, the picture it produces is easier to read. The lengths shown are rescaled: they stay proportional to the true magnitudes, but they are shrunk so that no arrow comes out too long.
Two habits help in reading such a plot. First, look for a component that never changes sign. A space field whose $y$-component equals $-2$ everywhere has all of its arrows leaning toward the negative $y$-direction, however the other two components vary. Second, read the plot as a velocity field and follow the particle it carries: for the field of Figure 12 the particle spirals around the $z$-axis clockwise as seen from above while it is swept upward.
The two force fields of Examples 4 and 5 come from inverse square laws, and the resulting formulas have the same shape. With a mass $M$ fixed at the origin, the gravitational force on a mass $m$ whose position vector is $\mathbf x$ is
With a charge $Q$ fixed at the origin instead, the electric force it exerts on a charge $q$ at $\mathbf x$ is
which pushes the charges apart when $qQ>0$ and pulls them together when $qQ\lt 0$. The minus sign in (3) is exactly what makes gravity always point back toward the origin.
Dividing (4) by $q$ takes the test charge out of the description and leaves a field belonging to $Q$ alone, the force per unit charge, called the electric field of $Q$:
삼변수함수에 같은 구성을 적용하면 $\mathbb R^3$ 위의 벡터장 $\nabla f=f_x\,\mathbf i+f_y\,\mathbf j+f_z\,\mathbf k$를 얻는다.
Let $f$ be a scalar function of two variables. Its gradient, defined back in Section 14.6 by
hands us one plane vector at every point of the domain of $f$, so $\nabla f$ is itself a vector field on $\mathbb R^2$; a field obtained in this way is called a gradient vector field. The same construction with three variables gives the vector field $\nabla f=f_x\,\mathbf i+f_y\,\mathbf j+f_z\,\mathbf k$ on $\mathbb R^3$.
Section 14.6 also says how such a field sits on a contour map of $f$: the vector $\nabla f$ crosses each level curve at a right angle, and it is long precisely where the level curves crowd together. The reason is that $\lvert\nabla f\rvert$ is the largest of the directional derivatives at the point, and closely spaced level curves mark a steep part of the graph.
Conservative vector field, potential function. A vector field $\mathbf F$ is conservative when it is the gradient field of some scalar function, that is, when there is a function $f$ with
Any such $f$ is then called a potential function for $\mathbf F$.
Conservative fields turn up constantly in physics, but they are special: a vector field written down at random is usually not the gradient of anything. How to decide whether a given field is conservative is settled in Sections 16.3 and 16.5.
The gravitational field (3) is the first field we can certify as conservative. Set
Differentiating $f$ with respect to each variable in turn reproduces the three components of $\mathbf F$ computed in Example 4, so $\nabla f=\mathbf F$ and $f$ is a potential function for the gravitational field.
Proof. Write $f(x,y,z)=mMG\,(x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2})^{-1/2}$. By the Chain Rule,
Since $f$ is symmetric in $x$, $y$, $z$, the same computation applied to $y$ and to $z$ gives
Writing $r=|\mathbf x|=\sqrt{x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2}}$ and assembling the three partial derivatives,
which is exactly the field $\mathbf F(\mathbf x)$ of Formula (3) found in Example 4. Hence $\nabla f=\mathbf F$.

성분함수는 $P(x,y)=-y$, $Q(x,y)=x$이다.
| $(x,y)$ | $\mathbf F(x,y)$ |
|---|---|
| $(1,0)$ | $\langle 0,1\rangle$ |
| $(0,1)$ | $\langle -1,0\rangle$ |
| $(-1,0)$ | $\langle 0,-1\rangle$ |
| $(0,-1)$ | $\langle 1,0\rangle$ |
| $(2,2)$ | $\langle -2,2\rangle$ |
| $(3,0)$ | $\langle 0,3\rangle$ |
| $(0,3)$ | $\langle -3,0\rangle$ |
Take the plane vector field $\mathbf F(x,y)=-y\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j$. Draw the vector $\mathbf F(x,y)$ at a few representative points, each arrow based at the point it belongs to, and identify the geometric pattern the arrows form.
Solution. The component functions are $P(x,y)=-y$ and $Q(x,y)=x$. Taking the dot product of the position vector $\langle x,y\rangle$ with $\mathbf F(x,y)=\langle -y,x\rangle$ gives
so $\mathbf F(x,y)$ is perpendicular to the position vector at every point. Also
so its length equals the distance from the origin to $(x,y)$. Values at a few representative points are listed below.
| $(x,y)$ | $\mathbf F(x,y)$ |
|---|---|
| $(1,0)$ | $\langle 0,1\rangle$ |
| $(0,1)$ | $\langle -1,0\rangle$ |
| $(-1,0)$ | $\langle 0,-1\rangle$ |
| $(0,-1)$ | $\langle 1,0\rangle$ |
| $(2,2)$ | $\langle -2,2\rangle$ |
| $(3,0)$ | $\langle 0,3\rangle$ |
| $(0,3)$ | $\langle -3,0\rangle$ |
So the arrow at $(x,y)$ is always tangent to the circle centered at the origin of radius $|\langle x,y\rangle|$, and it turns counterclockwise: at $(1,0)$ it points along $+\mathbf j$, at $(0,1)$ along $-\mathbf i$, and so on. Sketching the twelve representative vectors, each based at its own point as in the figure above, produces a field circling the origin counterclockwise.
Sketch the field $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=z\,\mathbf k$ on $\mathbb R^3$, and describe both the direction its vectors take and the way their length varies.
Solution. Since $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=z\,\mathbf k$, the component functions are $P=0$, $Q=0$, $R=z$: the direction and length of each vector are determined by $z$ alone, independent of $x$ and $y$, and every vector points straight up or down, along $\pm\mathbf k$.
At a point with $z>0$, $\mathbf F=z\,\mathbf k$ points in the positive direction, upward; at a point with $z\lt 0$ it points in the negative direction, downward; and $\mathbf F=\mathbf 0$ at every point of the $xy$-plane ($z=0$). Its length is $|\mathbf F(x,y,z)|=|z|$, so the arrows grow longer the farther the point lies from the $xy$-plane, i.e. as $|z|$ increases.
All points at a common height $z=c$ carry vectors that are parallel and equal in length, so the picture shows arrows pointing upward above the $xy$-plane and downward below it, lengthening steadily as the distance from the plane grows.
A fluid moves steadily through a pipe, and $\mathbf V(x,y,z)$ denotes its velocity at the point $(x,y,z)$ of the pipe's interior $E$. Explain in what sense $\mathbf V$ is a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$, what fields of this kind are called, and what the length of each arrow records.
Solution. By Definition 2, a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ is a function assigning to each point of a domain $E\subseteq\mathbb R^3$ a single vector in $\mathbb R^3$. Here the domain is the interior of the pipe, and to each point $(x,y,z)$ of $E$ is assigned the velocity vector $\mathbf V(x,y,z)$ of the fluid moving through that point — which is exactly what makes $\mathbf V$ a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$.
A vector field of this kind, assigning a velocity vector to each point of the domain, is called a velocity field: it is the natural way a vector field arises whenever a fluid or gas is in motion, as with wind over a bay or fluid moving through a pipe.
When such a field is sketched, the length of the arrow at $(x,y,z)$ represents the magnitude $|\mathbf V(x,y,z)|$, i.e. the speed of the fluid particle located there. The field $\mathbf F(x,y)=-y\,\mathbf i+x\,\mathbf j$ of Example 1 can likewise be read as the velocity field of a wheel spinning counterclockwise.
Put a body of mass $M$ at the origin of $\mathbb R^3$ and let a second body of mass $m$ have position vector $\mathbf x=\langle x,y,z\rangle$. Newton's Law of Gravitation gives the attraction between them the magnitude $\lvert\mathbf F\rvert=mMG/r^{2}$, where $r=\lvert\mathbf x\rvert$ is the distance between the bodies and $G$ is the gravitational constant. Express the gravitational force acting on the second body, first in compact vector form and then componentwise.
Solution. Newton's Law already fixes the magnitude, $|\mathbf F|=mMG/r^{2}$, so only the direction remains. Gravity is attractive, so it pulls the mass $m$ toward the origin: the direction of $\mathbf F$ is $-\mathbf x/|\mathbf x|$, opposite the unit vector $\mathbf x/|\mathbf x|$ pointing along $\mathbf x$.
Multiplying the magnitude by the direction and substituting $r=|\mathbf x|$ back in gives the vector form.
Since $\mathbf x=\langle x,y,z\rangle$, we have $|\mathbf x|^{3}=(x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2})^{3/2}$; distributing this over each component gives the componentwise form.
So the gravitational field is $\mathbf F(\mathbf x)=-\dfrac{mMG}{|\mathbf x|^{3}}\,\mathbf x$, with the componentwise expression above.
A charge $Q$ sits at the origin and a charge $q$ occupies the point with position vector $\mathbf x=\langle x,y,z\rangle$. Using Coulomb's Law, write the electric force $\mathbf F(\mathbf x)$ that $Q$ exerts on $q$, say when this force pushes the charges apart and when it draws them together, and then determine the electric field $\mathbf E$ of $Q$, defined as the force per unit charge.
Solution. By Coulomb's Law the magnitude of the force is $\varepsilon|qQ|/r^{2}$ ($\varepsilon$ a proportionality constant, $r=|\mathbf x|$). Unlike gravity, this force is repulsive between charges of the same sign and attractive between charges of opposite sign: if $qQ>0$ it pushes $q$ away from the origin, along $+\mathbf x/|\mathbf x|$; if $qQ\lt 0$ it pulls $q$ toward the origin, along $-\mathbf x/|\mathbf x|$. Both cases are captured at once by the direction $\operatorname{sign}(qQ)\cdot\mathbf x/|\mathbf x|$, so
Here, when the coefficient $\varepsilon qQ/|\mathbf x|^3$ is positive ($qQ>0$), $\mathbf F(\mathbf x)$ points the same way as $\mathbf x$, away from the origin, so the force is repulsive; when it is negative ($qQ\lt 0$), $\mathbf F(\mathbf x)$ points opposite $\mathbf x$, toward the origin, so the force is attractive.
The electric field is defined as the force per unit charge, so dividing $\mathbf F$ by $q$ gives
Let $f(x,y)=x^{2}y-y^{3}$. Compute the gradient vector field $\nabla f$, and explain how its arrows sit on a contour map of $f$ — both the direction they take and the way their length changes from place to place.
Solution. Differentiating $f(x,y)=x^{2}y-y^{3}$ with respect to each variable gives
so
By §14.6 (Directional Derivatives and the Gradient Vector), at every point of the domain $\nabla f$ is perpendicular to the level curve of $f$ through that point. Overlaying $\nabla f$ on a contour map of $f$, as in the figure above, shows every arrow meeting its own level curve at a right angle.
Moreover, where the level curves crowd together, $f$ changes rapidly over a short distance, so the directional derivative — and hence $|\nabla f|$ — is large; where the curves spread apart, $|\nabla f|$ is small. Consequently, in the figure the arrows are long where the level curves pack tightly and short where they are spread out.

표기 주의 — 강의 노트는 $\mathbf F=M\mathbf i+N\mathbf j+P\mathbf k$ 표기를 쓰므로 $P$의 의미가 다르다. 이 절에서 $P$는 $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$의 첫 성분이지만, 강의 노트에서 $P$는 셋째 성분이다.
(a) Corresponding lecture notes — Calculus II, Unit 11 (partly Unit 12)
- Computing and interpreting a gradient vector field — ex02 (full match; same type as Example 6)
- Sketching a plane vector field — yu02-2 (full match; same type as Examples 1 and 2)
- A field pointing toward the origin — yu02-1 (adjacent; same structure as the gravitational field of Example 4)
- A field normal to a sphere — pr02 (adjacent; a gradient field meeting level surfaces at right angles)
- Work done by a gravitational field — pr02 (adjacent; the field of Example 4 reappears as a line integral in Section 16.2)
- The formal definitions of a vector field (Definitions 1 and 2), the terms component function and scalar field, the Coulomb force and the electric field, and flow lines — no match
- Conservative fields and potential functions are already defined in this section of the textbook, whereas the lecture notes introduce them only in Unit 12, ex02.
A warning about notation — the lecture notes write a space field as $\mathbf F=M\mathbf i+N\mathbf j+P\mathbf k$, so the letter $P$ does not mean the same thing there. Here $P$ is the first component of $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$; in the lecture notes $P$ is the third one.
(b) Assignment (§16.1, third set)
Problems to submit: none / Recommended practice: none
