Section 16.5 restated Green's Theorem in the vector form
where $C$ is the boundary curve of the plane region $D$, carrying its positive orientation. Asking what the corresponding statement should be for a vector field on $\mathbb R^3$ leads to the guess
in which $S$ is now the boundary surface of a solid region $E$. Equation (1) turns out to be correct once suitable hypotheses are imposed on $E$ and $\mathbf F$; it is called the Divergence Theorem.
The pattern is the one already met in Green's Theorem and in Stokes' Theorem: on one side stands the integral over a region of a derivative of a function — here $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ — and on the other side the integral of the function itself over the boundary of that region.
Definition. A solid region $E$ that is of type 1, of type 2 and of type 3 all at once is called a simple solid region.
It is worth reviewing at this point the types of solid regions over which §15.6 was able to evaluate triple integrals. Solids bounded by an ellipsoid, or by a rectangular box, are examples of simple solid regions; the theorem below is stated and proved for every simple solid region, not merely for such examples.
The boundary of such an $E$ is a closed surface, and it is oriented by the convention adopted in §16.7: the positive orientation is the outward one, meaning that the unit normal vector $\mathbf n$ points away from $E$ at every point of the boundary.
The theorem is also known as Gauss's Theorem, after Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777–1855), who arrived at it while studying electrostatics.
In Eastern Europe the same result is attributed instead to the Russian mathematician Mikhail Ostrogradsky (1801–1862), who published it in 1826, and it is accordingly called Ostrogradsky's Theorem there.
The Divergence Theorem. Let $E$ be a simple solid region whose boundary surface $S$ has been given the positive (outward) orientation, and let $\mathbf F$ be a vector field each of whose component functions has continuous partial derivatives on some open region containing $E$. Then
Three hypotheses are doing work here and each of them is used in the proof: $E$ must be simple (so that it can be read as a type 1, a type 2 and a type 3 solid in turn), $S$ must carry the outward normal (a reversed normal flips the sign of the left-hand side), and the partial derivatives of $P$, $Q$, $R$ must be continuous on an open set around $E$, so that the triple integral on the right exists.
The argument that establishes the theorem is sketched below, in the card Outline of the Proof.
Read the two sides of the identity one at a time. The left-hand side is the flux of $\mathbf F$ across the surface that bounds $E$; the right-hand side is the triple integral of $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ taken over the whole of $E$.
So the theorem says that, under the stated hypotheses, these two numbers agree: what the field carries across the boundary is accounted for exactly by the divergence accumulated inside.
$\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$ 라 쓰면 $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=\dfrac{\partial P}{\partial x}+\dfrac{\partial Q}{\partial y}+\dfrac{\partial R}{\partial z}$ 이므로, 정리의 양변은 각각 세 항으로 쪼개진다.
$\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$라 하면 $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=P_x+Q_y+R_z$이고, 곡면적분 $\iint_S\mathbf F\cdot\mathbf n\,dS$도 세 성분으로 선형이게 나뉘므로, 다음 세 등식만 보이면 정리가 증명된다.
Write $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$, so that $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=\partial P/\partial x+\partial Q/\partial y+\partial R/\partial z$. Both integrals in the theorem then break into three summands apiece, and the theorem follows once these three identities are in hand:
Identity (4) is the one carried out in detail. Read $E$ as a type 1 solid,
where $D$ is the projection of $E$ onto the $xy$-plane. Formula 15.6.6 followed by the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus collapses the triple integral to a double integral over $D$:
On the other side, the boundary $S$ falls into a bottom piece $S_1$, a top piece $S_2$ and possibly a vertical piece $S_3$ standing over the boundary curve of $D$ (for a sphere no such piece occurs). Along $S_3$ the normal is horizontal while $\mathbf k$ is vertical, so $\mathbf k\cdot\mathbf n=0$ there and that piece contributes nothing:
Formula 16.7.10, applied to the field $R\,\mathbf k$, evaluates the two surviving pieces: the upward normal on $S_2$ gives $+\iint_D R(x,y,u_2(x,y))\,dA$ and the downward normal on $S_1$ gives $-\iint_D R(x,y,u_1(x,y))\,dA$, whose sum is precisely the right side of (5). Identities (2) and (3) come out the same way, this time reading $E$ as a type 2 and as a type 3 solid.
The route just described runs closely parallel to the proof of Green's Theorem.
Proof. Write $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j+R\,\mathbf k$, so $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F=P_x+Q_y+R_z$, and the surface integral $\iint_S\mathbf F\cdot\mathbf n\,dS$ splits linearly into the same three summands. It is enough to establish
The three identities are the same argument with the axes relabeled, so only the $R$-term is carried out in detail.
Let $E$ be a type 1 solid, $E=\{(x,y,z)\mid(x,y)\in D,\ u_1(x,y)\le z\le u_2(x,y)\}$. Integrating in $z$ first (the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus applied to the inner variable) gives
This value is now recovered as a surface integral over $S$. The boundary $S$ splits into a bottom piece $S_1:z=u_1(x,y)$, a top piece $S_2:z=u_2(x,y)$, and possibly a vertical piece $S_3$ standing over the boundary curve of $D$. At every point of $S_3$ the tangent plane is vertical, so the normal $\mathbf n$ is parallel to the $xy$-plane and $\mathbf k\cdot\mathbf n=0$ there — $S_3$ contributes nothing to $\iint_S R\,\mathbf k\cdot\mathbf n\,dS$. Since $S_2$ carries the upward orientation of the graph $z=u_2(x,y)$, Formula 16.7.10 applied to the field $R\mathbf k$ gives directly
$S_1$ is the same kind of graph but carries the downward orientation — it must point out of $E$ — so the sign flips:
Adding the three pieces,
which matches the triple integral found above exactly. Hence $\iint_S R\,\mathbf k\cdot\mathbf n\,dS=\iiint_E R_z\,dV$.
The $P$-term follows the same argument, letter for letter, once $E$ is read as a type 2 solid (boundary split into $x=v_1(y,z)$, $x=v_2(y,z)$, and a side piece, integrating in $x$); the $Q$-term follows once $E$ is read as a type 3 solid (boundary split into $y=w_1(x,z)$, $y=w_2(x,z)$, and a side piece, integrating in $y$). Since $E$ is a simple solid region all three descriptions apply, and adding the three identities gives
Only simple solid regions were covered by the proof, but the theorem survives for any region that is a finite union of such pieces; the pieces are joined exactly as they were in §16.4, where Green's Theorem was widened in the same manner.
The case worth recording separately is a solid with a cavity. Let $S_1$ be a closed surface lying inside a second closed surface $S_2$, and let $E$ be the region trapped between them, with $\mathbf n_1$ and $\mathbf n_2$ denoting the outward normals of $S_1$ and $S_2$. The boundary of $E$ is $S=S_1\cup S_2$, and the normal pointing out of $E$ is $\mathbf n=-\mathbf n_1$ along $S_1$ — there it aims into the cavity — while $\mathbf n=\mathbf n_2$ along $S_2$. Applying the Divergence Theorem to $S$ therefore yields
Equation (7) — a solid with a cavity.
Example 3 below is settled by this version of the theorem: it replaces an integral over an arbitrary closed surface by an integral over a sphere, where the computation can actually be carried out.
양변을 $V(B_a)$로 나누면
Fluid flow supplies another use of the theorem. Let $\mathbf v(x,y,z)$ be the velocity field of a fluid whose density $\rho$ is constant, and put $\mathbf F=\rho\mathbf v$, the rate of flow per unit area. Fix a point $P_0(x_0,y_0,z_0)$ of the fluid and let $B_a$ be the ball of very small radius $a$ centered at $P_0$, whose boundary sphere is $S_a$.
Equation (9) — divergence at a point as a limit of fluxes. If each component function of $\mathbf F$ has continuous partial derivatives on some open region containing $P_0$ (so that $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ is continuous there), then
What (9) reports is that $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F(P_0)$ measures the net rate of outward flux per unit volume at $P_0$ — and that is where the name divergence comes from.
Proof. Apply the Divergence Theorem to the boundary sphere $S_a$ of $B_a$:
Since $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F$ is continuous at $P_0$, for every $\varepsilon\gt0$ there is a $\delta\gt0$ such that $|\operatorname{div}\mathbf F(P)-\operatorname{div}\mathbf F(P_0)|\lt\varepsilon$ for every point $P$ within distance $\delta$ of $P_0$. For $0\lt a\lt\delta$ every point of $B_a$ satisfies this bound, so
Dividing by $V(B_a)$,
Since $\delta$ can be found for every choice of $\varepsilon\gt0$, the left side tends to $0$ as $a\to0$; that is,
which is equation (9).
평면 벡터장 $\mathbf F=x^2\,\mathbf i+y^2\,\mathbf j$가 두 경우를 모두 보여 준다.
Definition. Let $P$ be a point at which $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F(P)\gt 0$; the net flow near $P$ is then directed outward, and $P$ is called a source. If instead $\operatorname{div}\mathbf F(P)\lt 0$, the net flow near $P$ is directed inward and $P$ is called a sink.
The plane field $\mathbf F=x^2\,\mathbf i+y^2\,\mathbf j$ illustrates both. Its divergence is
which is positive precisely when $y\gt-x$. Points above the line $y=-x$ are therefore sources and points below it are sinks.
A plot of the field confirms the classification by eye: near a point $P_1$ above the line the arrows arriving are shorter than the arrows leaving, so the net flow there is outward, whereas near a point $P_2$ below the line the incoming arrows are the longer ones and the net flow is inward.

벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=z\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j+x\,\mathbf k$ 가 주어져 있다.
$\mathbf F(x,y,z)=z\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j+x\,\mathbf k$이므로
따라서 $\displaystyle\iint_S\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf S=\frac{4\pi}{3}$이다.
Let $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=z\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j+x\,\mathbf k$. Find the flux of $\mathbf F$ through the unit sphere $x^2+y^2+z^2=1$, taken with its outward orientation.
Solution. Since $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=z\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j+x\,\mathbf k$,
The unit sphere is the boundary of the unit ball $B=\{(x,y,z)\mid x^2+y^2+z^2\le1\}$, already carrying the outward orientation, so the Divergence Theorem gives
Parametrizing the sphere directly by $x=\sin\phi\cos\theta,\ y=\sin\phi\sin\theta,\ z=\cos\phi$ and integrating $\mathbf F\cdot\mathbf n$ (with the same orientation) gives the same value, but that route requires several trigonometric integrals handled separately. Here the constant divergence $1$ collapses the whole computation to a volume, which is far shorter. Hence $\displaystyle\iint_S\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf S=\frac{4\pi}{3}$.
$\mathbf F=xy\,\mathbf i+\left(y^2+e^{xz^2}\right)\mathbf j+\sin(xy)\,\mathbf k$의 발산은
Let $E$ be the solid enclosed by the parabolic cylinder $z=1-x^2$ together with the three planes $z=0$, $y=0$ and $y+z=2$, and give its boundary surface $S$ the outward orientation. For the field
evaluate the surface integral $\iint_S\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf S$.
Solution. The divergence of $\mathbf F=xy\,\mathbf i+\left(y^2+e^{xz^2}\right)\mathbf j+\sin(xy)\,\mathbf k$ is
so the terms $e^{xz^2}$ and $\sin(xy)$, neither of which has an elementary antiderivative, both disappear at the differentiation step. Rather than parametrizing and summing $\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf S$ over the four pieces of $S$ (the parabolic cylinder and three planes), the Divergence Theorem reduces the whole computation to a single triple integral.
Writing $E$ as the type 3 solid
(the parabolic cylinder $z=1-x^2$ bounds $z$ above, the plane $z=0$ below, the plane $y=0$ bounds $y$ below, and the plane $y+z=2$ bounds $y$ above),
Integrating from the inside out, $\displaystyle\int_0^{2-z}y\,dy=\frac{(2-z)^2}{2}$, and since $2-z=1+x^2$ when $z=1-x^2$,
Since $(1+x^2)^3=1+3x^2+3x^4+x^6$, this is $8-(1+x^2)^3=7-3x^2-3x^4-x^6$, an even function, so
Hence
$\mathbf x=\langle x,y,z\rangle$, $r=|\mathbf x|$라 하면 $\mathbf E$의 $x$성분은 $\varepsilon Qx\,r^{-3}$이고
$S_1$ 위에서는 $|\mathbf x|=a$이고 바깥쪽 법선이 $\mathbf n=\mathbf x/a$이므로
두 결과를 합치면 $\displaystyle\iint_S\mathbf E\cdot d\mathbf S=4\pi\varepsilon Q$이고, 이 값은 $a$의 크기나 $S$의 모양에 전혀 의존하지 않는다.
A charge $Q$ sitting at the origin produces the electric field of Example 16.1.5,
in which $\mathbf x=\langle x,y,z\rangle$ is a position vector. Using the Divergence Theorem, show that every closed surface $S$ enclosing the origin receives one and the same electric flux, namely $\iint_S\mathbf E\cdot d\mathbf S=4\pi\varepsilon Q$, whatever the shape of $S$.
Proof. Since $\mathbf E$ is undefined at the origin, the Divergence Theorem cannot be applied directly to the solid enclosed by $S$. Instead, draw a sphere $S_1$ centered at the origin with radius $a$ small enough that $S_1$ lies entirely inside $S$, and let $E$ be the solid trapped between $S_1$ and $S$ (following the source, boldface $\mathbf E$ is the electric field while the lightface $E$ names this solid region). The components of $\mathbf E$ are smooth away from the origin, hence smooth throughout $E$, so equation (7) applies:
A direct computation shows $\operatorname{div}\mathbf E=0$ at every point but the origin. Writing $\mathbf x=\langle x,y,z\rangle$ and $r=|\mathbf x|$, the $x$-component of $\mathbf E$ is $\varepsilon Qx\,r^{-3}$, and
the $y$- and $z$-derivatives take the same form, so adding all three gives
Since $E$ lies entirely in the region $r\ne0$, $\iiint_E\operatorname{div}\mathbf E\,dV=0$, and the identity above collapses to
— whatever the shape of $S$, only the value on the sphere $S_1$ needs computing.
On $S_1$, $|\mathbf x|=a$ and the outward normal is $\mathbf n=\mathbf x/a$, so
a constant on $S_1$. Hence
Combining the two results, $\displaystyle\iint_S\mathbf E\cdot d\mathbf S=4\pi\varepsilon Q$, a value that depends on neither the radius $a$ nor the shape of $S$.

A warning about notation — the lecture notes call the solid region D and write the element of surface area with a different symbol than this section does. Only the notation differs; read one letter for the other and the two accounts agree.
