Up to this point the surfaces available to us have been a short list: cylinders, quadric surfaces, graphs of the form $z=f(x,y)$, and level surfaces of functions of three variables. A far wider supply becomes available once we borrow the idea used for space curves.
A space curve was described by a vector function $\mathbf r(t)$ of a single parameter. Allowing two parameters, so that the vector function reads $\mathbf r(u,v)$, produces a surface instead of a curve. This section sets up that description, finds the tangent plane and the area of such a surface, and then specializes the general area formula to two familiar cases: graphs $z=f(x,y)$ and surfaces of revolution.
어떤 $(u,v)\in D$에 대하여
Equations (1), (2) — Parametric Surface. Let $D$ be a region of the $uv$-plane and let
be a vector-valued function defined on $D$. The collection of all points $(x,y,z)$ of $\mathbb R^{3}$ whose coordinates satisfy
for some $(u,v)\in D$ is called a parametric surface $S$, and the three scalar equations (2) are parametric equations of $S$.
The picture behind the definition: draw the position vector $\mathbf r(u,v)$ from the origin, and watch its tip. As the parameter pair $(u,v)$ sweeps across the domain $D$, that tip sweeps out $S$. The domain $D$ therefore acts as a flat chart of the surface, with $(u,v)$ serving as a pair of coordinates on $S$.
Freezing one parameter and letting the other run produces a curve lying on $S$. Two families arise this way.
Hold $u=u_0$ fixed. Then $v\mapsto\mathbf r(u_0,v)$ is a vector function of the single variable $v$, and it traces a curve $C_1$ on $S$. Hold $v=v_0$ fixed instead, and $u\mapsto\mathbf r(u,v_0)$ traces a second curve $C_2$ on $S$. Curves obtained in either way are the grid curves of the parametrization.
Under the correspondence $(u,v)\mapsto\mathbf r(u,v)$ the grid curves are exactly the images of the vertical and horizontal lines of the parameter domain: the line $u=u_0$ is carried to $C_1$, the line $v=v_0$ to $C_2$. Plotting software draws a surface by drawing enough of these two families, which is why the picture of a parametric surface looks like a woven mesh.
On the sphere parametrized by the two spherical angles, the two families of grid curves have familiar geographic names. Keeping $\phi$ constant yields a circle of constant latitude (the equator among them); keeping $\theta$ constant yields a meridian, that is, the semicircle of constant longitude running from one pole to the other. Prescribing a pair $(u,v)$ on a general parametric surface is the same kind of act as prescribing a latitude and a longitude on the globe.
A margin remark makes the practical point. Solving $x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2}=1$ for $z$ and graphing the two hemispheres separately forces the plotter to work over a rectangular grid in $x$ and $y$; the result shows a visible gap near the equator, where the surface turns vertical. Graphing the same sphere from the parametrization of Example 4 spreads the grid evenly over the surface and produces a smooth picture instead.
A surface presented as a graph $z=f(x,y)$ never needs a clever change of variables: the two coordinates $x$ and $y$ already serve as parameters. Setting
turns the graph into a parametric surface with vector equation
So graphs form a special case of parametric surfaces, and any statement proved for parametric surfaces in general applies to them. The reverse inclusion fails: a sphere, for instance, is not the graph of a single function of $x$ and $y$.
One surface admits many parametrizations, and none of them is canonical. Which one to prefer is decided by the problem at hand: the cone of Example 7 can be parametrized by its own $x$ and $y$, or by polar quantities $r$ and $\theta$, and the second choice makes the later integrals shorter.
The choice of parameters also changes how easily a piece of the surface can be cut out, since restricting the domain $D$ restricts the surface. For the cone $z=2\sqrt{x^{2}+y^{2}}$ the polar parametrization sends the piece with $z\le 1$ to the disk $0\le r\le\tfrac12$ of the parameter plane, a description with no square roots in it.
$f$가 $[a,b]$에서 연속이고 그 위에서 $f(x)\ge 0$이라 하고, 곡선 $y=f(x)$, $a\le x\le b$를 $x$축 둘레로 회전시켜 쓸리는 곡면을 $S$라 하자.
을 가지며, 매개변수영역은 $a\le x\le b$, $0\le\theta\le 2\pi$이다.
Equations (3) — Surface of Revolution. Let $f$ be continuous on $[a,b]$ with $f(x)\ge 0$ there, and let $S$ be the surface swept out when the curve $y=f(x)$, $a\le x\le b$, is revolved about the $x$-axis. Taking as parameters the abscissa $x$ and the angle of rotation $\theta$, the surface $S$ has parametric equations
with parameter domain $a\le x\le b$, $0\le\theta\le 2\pi$.
Why the formulas look like this: a point of $S$ over the abscissa $x$ lies on the circle of radius $f(x)$ traced in the plane perpendicular to the $x$-axis at that abscissa, and $(f(x)\cos\theta,\ f(x)\sin\theta)$ are the coordinates of the point of that circle at angle $\theta$. Revolving the same curve about the $y$-axis or the $z$-axis is handled by permuting the roles of the coordinates in exactly the same way (Exercise 30).
Fix a point $P_0$ on $S$ with position vector $\mathbf r(u_0,v_0)$, and look at the two grid curves through it. Each is a vector function of one variable, so each has a tangent vector obtained by differentiating componentwise.
The grid curve $C_1$, on which $u=u_0$ stays fixed, has at $P_0$ the tangent vector
and the grid curve $C_2$, on which $v=v_0$ stays fixed, has at $P_0$ the tangent vector
Note which letter goes with which curve: moving along $C_1$ changes $v$ only, so its velocity vector is the $v$-derivative $\mathbf r_v$; moving along $C_2$ changes $u$ only, so its velocity vector is $\mathbf r_u$. Both are evaluated at the parameter pair $(u_0,v_0)$ belonging to $P_0$.
A parametric surface $S$ given by $\mathbf r(u,v)$ on $D$ is called smooth when the cross product $\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v$ is never the zero vector on $D$. At a point $P_0$ of a smooth surface, the tangent plane to $S$ is the plane through $P_0$ containing the two tangent vectors $\mathbf r_u$ and $\mathbf r_v$, and $\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v$ is a normal vector for it.
Geometrically, smoothness says the surface carries no corner or kink: the two tangent vectors stay independent at every point, so they really do span a plane. Where $\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v=\mathbf 0$ the two tangent vectors are parallel or one of them vanishes, and the tangent plane fails to be determined — the vertex of a cone is the standard instance (in the polar parametrization $\mathbf r_\theta=\mathbf 0$ there).
Suppose the parameter domain is a rectangle $D$, and cut it into subrectangles $R_{ij}$ of dimensions $\Delta u$ by $\Delta v$. The images of these subrectangles cut the surface into patches $S_{ij}$, and the total area of $S$ is the sum of the areas of the patches.
Take the patch $S_{ij}$ whose corner $P_{ij}$ is the image of the lower left corner of $R_{ij}$, and write $\mathbf r_u^{*}$, $\mathbf r_v^{*}$ for the two tangent vectors evaluated there. The two edges of the patch leaving $P_{ij}$ are grid curves, and along them a partial derivative is close to the corresponding difference quotient, so those edges are approximated by the vectors $\Delta u\,\mathbf r_u^{*}$ and $\Delta v\,\mathbf r_v^{*}$. Replacing the curved patch by the parallelogram these two vectors determine is the whole idea; the parallelogram has area $|\mathbf r_u^{*}\times\mathbf r_v^{*}|\,\Delta u\,\Delta v$.
Adding the parallelogram areas over all subrectangles produces
which is a Riemann sum for the double integral $\iint_D|\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v|\,du\,dv$. That integral is therefore the natural candidate for the area of $S$, and it is taken as the definition below.
Proof. Let $(u_i,v_j)$ be the lower left corner of the subrectangle $R_{ij}=[u_i,u_i+\Delta u]\times[v_j,v_j+\Delta v]$, and write $\mathbf r_u^{*}=\mathbf r_u(u_i,v_j)$, $\mathbf r_v^{*}=\mathbf r_v(u_i,v_j)$. If every component of $\mathbf r$ is differentiable, the definition of the partial derivative with respect to $u$ gives
where the error term satisfies
that is, the displacement along the grid-curve edge $u\mapsto\mathbf r(u,v_j)$ of the patch $S_{ij}$ is approximated by $\Delta u\,\mathbf r_u^{*}$, with an error $\mathbf E_1$ that vanishes faster than $\Delta u$ itself. The same argument in the $v$-direction gives
together with
Dropping the error terms, the patch $S_{ij}$ is therefore approximated by the parallelogram spanned by the two vectors $\Delta u\,\mathbf r_u^{*}$ and $\Delta v\,\mathbf r_v^{*}$ issuing from $P_{ij}=\mathbf r(u_i,v_j)$, and the length of their cross product is the area of that parallelogram, so
(the scalars $\Delta u,\Delta v$ pull out of the cross product by bilinearity, then out of the absolute value). Summing this approximation over every subrectangle of $D$ gives
and the right side is a Riemann sum for the function $(u,v)\mapsto|\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v|$, sampled at the lower left corner of each subrectangle. If $\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v$ is continuous on $D$, then as the partition is refined ($\Delta u,\Delta v\to0$) the error in the approximation above tends to $0$, and by the definition of the double integral from Section 15.1 the Riemann sum converges to $\iint_D|\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v|\,dA$. It is therefore natural to take this limiting value as the definition of the area $A(S)$ — which is exactly Definition 6 of the next card.
Definition 6. Let $S$ be a smooth parametric surface given by $\mathbf r(u,v)$ for $(u,v)\in D$, and suppose $S$ is covered exactly once as $(u,v)$ ranges over $D$. Then the surface area of $S$ is
where
Two hypotheses carry weight here. Smoothness keeps $|\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v|$ away from zero, so the parallelogram approximation of the previous card does not degenerate; and the requirement that $S$ be traced only once keeps the integral from counting a portion of the surface twice.
그러면 $\mathbf r_x=\mathbf i+\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x}\,\mathbf k$이고 $\mathbf r_y=\mathbf j+\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial y}\,\mathbf k$이므로
그래프를 카드 5의 방식대로 $\mathbf r(x,y)=x\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j+f(x,y)\,\mathbf k$로 매개화하면, $y$를 상수로 고정하고 $x$에 관해 성분별로 미분해
즉 $\mathbf r_x\times\mathbf r_y=-\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x}\,\mathbf i-\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial y}\,\mathbf j+\mathbf k$이며, 이것이 식 (7)이다.
Equations (7), (8) — Normal Vector for a Graph. Let $S$ be the graph $z=f(x,y)$ of a function $f$ with continuous partial derivatives, parametrized by $x$ and $y$ themselves. Then $\mathbf r_x=\mathbf i+\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x}\,\mathbf k$ and $\mathbf r_y=\mathbf j+\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial y}\,\mathbf k$, so
and consequently
The third component of the normal vector is $1$, never zero, so the graph of a differentiable function is automatically a smooth surface in the sense of the definition above.
Proof. Parametrize the graph as in Card 5, $\mathbf r(x,y)=x\,\mathbf i+y\,\mathbf j+f(x,y)\,\mathbf k$. Holding $y$ fixed and differentiating componentwise with respect to $x$ gives
and holding $x$ fixed and differentiating with respect to $y$ gives
Expanding the cross product as a determinant,
so $\mathbf r_x\times\mathbf r_y=-\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial x}\,\mathbf i-\dfrac{\partial f}{\partial y}\,\mathbf j+\mathbf k$, which is Equation (7). The length of this vector is the square root of the sum of the squares of its components,
and since $z=f(x,y)$ we may write $\partial f/\partial x=\partial z/\partial x$ and $\partial f/\partial y=\partial z/\partial y$, giving the second equality of Equation (8),
Equation (9) — Area of a Graph. If $S$ is the graph of $z=f(x,y)$ over a region $D$ of the $xy$-plane and $f$ has continuous partial derivatives on $D$, then
A margin note points out the family resemblance to the arc length formula of Section 8.1. For a plane curve $y=g(x)$ the length is $L=\int_a^b\sqrt{1+(dy/dx)^{2}}\,dx$; formula (9) is the same shape one dimension up, with one square added under the radical for the second partial derivative and a double integral in place of the single one.
Proof. Viewing $S$ as the parametric surface whose own parameters are $x$ and $y$, Definition 6 gives its area as
(this is just Card 11 with $u,v$ renamed $x,y$; the name of a parameter plays no role in the formula). The integrand $|\mathbf r_x\times\mathbf r_y|$ was already computed in the previous card, Equation (8):
Substituting this in place gives
which is Equation (9). So Equation (9) is not a new computation at all; it is simply Definition 6's integrand written out explicitly for the special parametrization furnished by a graph.

Definition 6 does not contradict the surface-area formula of one-variable calculus. Apply it to the surface of revolution parametrized by (3), with $f$ positive and continuously differentiable on $[a,b]$. Then
and integrating over the parameter rectangle recovers
which is Formula 8.2.4.
So the two-parameter definition specializes correctly: a surface of revolution has the same area whether it is measured by the double integral of Definition 6 or by the single integral learned in Chapter 8.
Proof. Let $f$ be positive and continuously differentiable on $[a,b]$. Differentiating the parametrization of (3), $\mathbf r(x,\theta)=x\,\mathbf i+f(x)\cos\theta\,\mathbf j+f(x)\sin\theta\,\mathbf k$, with respect to each parameter gives
Expanding the cross product as a determinant,
Writing out each component: the $\mathbf i$-component is $f'(x)\cos\theta\cdot f(x)\cos\theta-f'(x)\sin\theta\cdot\bigl(-f(x)\sin\theta\bigr)=f(x)f'(x)\bigl(\cos^2\theta+\sin^2\theta\bigr)=f(x)f'(x)$; the $\mathbf j$-component is $-\bigl(1\cdot f(x)\cos\theta-f'(x)\sin\theta\cdot0\bigr)=-f(x)\cos\theta$; and the $\mathbf k$-component is $1\cdot\bigl(-f(x)\sin\theta\bigr)-f'(x)\cos\theta\cdot0=-f(x)\sin\theta$. Hence
whose length is
(the last equality uses $f(x)>0$, so $\sqrt{f(x)^2}=f(x)$). The parameter domain is the rectangle $a\le x\le b$, $0\le\theta\le2\pi$, so Definition 6 gives directly
The integrand does not involve $\theta$, so the $\theta$-integral contributes only a factor of $2\pi$, and
which is precisely Formula 8.2.4 of Section 8.2.

벡터함수 $\mathbf r(u,v)=2\cos u\,\mathbf i+v\,\mathbf j+2\sin u\,\mathbf k$가 그리는 곡면이 어떤 곡면인지 밝히고, 그 모양을 그려라.
Determine which surface is traced out by the vector function $\mathbf r(u,v)=2\cos u\,\mathbf i+v\,\mathbf j+2\sin u\,\mathbf k$, and draw it.
Solution. Reading off components, $x=2\cos u$, $y=v$, $z=2\sin u$. Here $y$ is just the parameter $v$ carried over unchanged, so it is unconstrained, while $x,z$ depend on $u$ alone. Whatever $u$ is,
holds identically, so every point of $S$ satisfies $x^2+z^2=4$. Conversely, any point with $x^2+z^2=4$ has some angle $u_0$ with $x=2\cos u_0$, $z=2\sin u_0$ (a point on the unit circle scaled by $2$), and taking $v=y$ realizes that point as $\mathbf r(u_0,y)$, so it does lie on $S$. Thus $S$ coincides exactly with the set of points satisfying $x^2+z^2=4$.
Since $x,z$ stay on a circle of radius $2$ no matter what value the free coordinate $y$ takes, $S$ is a circular cylinder of radius $2$ whose axis is the $y$-axis. The parameter $u$ plays the role of the angle around that circle, and $v$ the role of displacement along the axis.

$v=v_0$ 고정. 그러면 $x=(2+\sin v_0)\cos u$, $y=(2+\sin v_0)\sin u$이므로 $\rho:=2+\sin v_0$을 상수로 두면
$u=u_0$ 고정.
Plot the parametric surface
over the parameter rectangle $0\le u\le 4\pi$, $0\le v\le 2\pi$, then decide which of the grid curves in the plot are the ones along which $u$ stays constant and which are the ones along which $v$ stays constant.
Solution. Examine the two families of grid curves separately.
Fix $v=v_0$. Then $x=(2+\sin v_0)\cos u$ and $y=(2+\sin v_0)\sin u$, so writing $\rho:=2+\sin v_0$ for the constant,
holds identically — as $u$ varies, $x,y$ always lie on the circle of radius $\rho$. Meanwhile $z=u+\cos v_0$ increases in direct proportion to $u$, the angle swept around that circle. As $u$ runs from $0$ to $4\pi$ the curve winds twice around the circle while its height climbs steadily, so this curve is a coil (a spiral) of radius $\rho$. This is the grid curve with $v$ held constant.
Fix $u=u_0$. Then $x=(2+\sin v)\cos u_0$, $y=(2+\sin v)\sin u_0$, and since $\cos u_0,\sin u_0$ are constants, the point $(x,y)$ always lies in the fixed vertical half-plane through the origin in direction $(\cos u_0,\sin u_0)$. Inside that half-plane, set $X=2+\sin v$ (horizontal distance from the axis) and $Z=u_0+\cos v$; then
so as $v$ runs through one full period, the curve traces a circle of radius $1$ centered at $(2,u_0)$ inside that half-plane. This is the grid curve with $u$ held constant, and it appears as a closed circle lying in a fixed vertical plane.
In summary, the grid curves with $v$ constant are the spirals winding along the tube, while the grid curves with $u$ constant are the circular cross-sections cutting straight across that spiral tube.
역으로 임의의 $u,v\in\mathbb R$에 대해 이 식이 주는 점은 $\overrightarrow{P_0P}=u\mathbf a+v\mathbf b$가 $\mathbf a,\mathbf b$의 일차결합이므로 그 평면 위에 있다.
$\mathbf r_0=\langle x_0,y_0,z_0\rangle$, $\mathbf a=\langle a_1,a_2,a_3\rangle$, $\mathbf b=\langle b_1,b_2,b_3\rangle$로 성분을 쓰면, 성분별 매개변수방정식은
이다.
Let $P_0$ be the point with position vector $\mathbf r_0$, and let $\mathbf a$ and $\mathbf b$ be two vectors that are not parallel to each other. Give a vector function tracing the plane through $P_0$ in which $\mathbf a$ and $\mathbf b$ lie, and write its parametric equations in component form as well.
Solution. Let $P$ be an arbitrary point of the plane through $P_0$ that contains $\mathbf a,\mathbf b$. Since $\mathbf a,\mathbf b$ are not parallel, together they form a basis spanning that plane, so $\overrightarrow{P_0P}$ is written uniquely as
for some scalars $u,v$. The position vector of $P$ is $\mathbf r=\mathbf r_0+\overrightarrow{P_0P}$, so
Conversely, for any $u,v\in\mathbb R$ the point this formula gives lies in the plane, because $\overrightarrow{P_0P}=u\mathbf a+v\mathbf b$ is a linear combination of $\mathbf a,\mathbf b$. So this vector function sweeps out exactly the whole plane, with no restriction on the parameters.
Writing $\mathbf r_0=\langle x_0,y_0,z_0\rangle$, $\mathbf a=\langle a_1,a_2,a_3\rangle$, $\mathbf b=\langle b_1,b_2,b_3\rangle$ in components, the parametric equations read

Set up a parametric representation of the sphere $x^{2}+y^{2}+z^{2}=a^{2}$, centered at the origin with radius $a$, and state what its parameter domain $D$ is.
Solution. Recall spherical coordinates $(\rho,\theta,\phi)$: a point of the sphere is exactly one whose distance from the origin is fixed at $\rho=a$. Taking the remaining two degrees of freedom — the azimuthal angle $\theta$ (measured from the positive $x$-axis) and the polar angle $\phi$ (measured from the positive $z$-axis) — as parameters, and substituting $\rho=a$ into the conversion formulas between spherical and rectangular coordinates, gives
As a vector function,
Substituting these components confirms that the parametrization does lie on the sphere:
an identity. To cover the whole sphere without duplication (aside from the two poles and the meridian at longitude $0$), it suffices to let $\phi$ range over $[0,\pi]$ and $\theta$ over $[0,2\pi]$, so the parameter domain is
The grid curves with $\phi$ constant are circles of constant latitude (the equator among them), and those with $\theta$ constant are meridians — semicircles of constant longitude joining the north and south poles.

Represent parametrically the portion of the cylindrical surface $x^{2}+y^{2}=4$ that satisfies $0\le z\le 1$, and describe its parameter domain $D$.
Solution. Points with $x^2+y^2=4$ are exactly the points whose distance from the $z$-axis is fixed at $2$, so plane polar coordinates $x=2\cos\theta$, $y=2\sin\theta$ sweep out that circle. The remaining degree of freedom of the cylinder is height, and $z$ itself already serves as that parameter, so
that is,
Indeed $x^2+y^2=4\cos^2\theta+4\sin^2\theta=4$ holds identically regardless of $\theta$, so this parametrization does lie on the cylindrical surface. Covering the full cylinder once requires $\theta$ to range over $[0,2\pi]$, and the condition $0\le z\le1$ directly fixes the range of $z$, so the parameter domain is
Write down a vector function whose image is the elliptic paraboloid $z=x^{2}+2y^{2}$.
Solution. This surface is already presented as a graph, with $z$ solved for as a function of $x,y$, so the recipe of Card 5 (every graph is a parametric surface) applies directly: take $x,y$ themselves as parameters and substitute the formula for $z$.
that is,
With this choice the third component automatically satisfies $z=x^2+2y^2$, so as $(x,y)$ ranges over the whole $xy$-plane (that is, $D=\mathbb R^2$), the image of this vector function coincides exactly with the given elliptic paraboloid.
The upper half of the cone $z^{2}=4x^{2}+4y^{2}$ is the same set as the surface $z=2\sqrt{x^{2}+y^{2}}$. Produce two different parametric representations of it.
Solution. Parametrization 1 — use $x,y$ themselves. Since $z=2\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$ is a graph, Card 5's recipe takes $x,y$ themselves as parameters:
This always works, but the square root left sitting in the third component is awkward once an integral over this surface is required.
Parametrization 2 — use polar coordinates. Since $x^2+y^2=r^2$, polar coordinates $x=r\cos\theta$, $y=r\sin\theta$ ($r\ge0$) turn $\sqrt{x^2+y^2}$ into simply $r$, so the square root disappears:
Indeed $z^2=4r^2=4(x^2+y^2)$ holds, so the surface equation is satisfied. Choosing parameters adapted to the cone's own symmetry this way makes later computations much shorter, as Card 6 (parametrizations are not unique) points out: to cut out the piece with $z\le1$, Parametrization 2 needs only a change of parameter domain to $0\le r\le\tfrac12$, while Parametrization 1 must first solve the square-root condition $2\sqrt{x^2+y^2}\le1$ to reach the disk $x^2+y^2\le\tfrac14$.
Spin the curve $y=\sin x$, $0\le x\le 2\pi$, once around the $x$-axis. Obtain parametric equations for the surface of revolution this sweeps out, and use them to draw it.
Solution. Set $f(x)=\sin x$ and apply Equations (3) directly. The parametric equations of the surface of revolution about the $x$-axis are
Indeed $y^2+z^2=\sin^2x\cos^2\theta+\sin^2x\sin^2\theta=\sin^2x$ holds regardless of $\theta$, so the cross-section over the abscissa $x$ is always a circle of radius $|\sin x|$, matching what it means to revolve about the $x$-axis.
The hypothesis $f\ge0$ of Equations (3) holds only for $0\le x\le\pi$, however; on $\pi\lt x\lt2\pi$, $\sin x\lt 0$. The parametrization still works without trouble even so: with a negative radius $\sin x$, letting $\theta$ run through a full period $0$ to $2\pi$ still sweeps out exactly the same circle as it would with the angle shifted by $\pi$ (a negative radius merely reverses the phase, not the locus traced). The result is a radius that shrinks to $0$ at $x=\pi$ and then opens back out, producing two symmetric spindle-shaped lobes that meet at a single point (a vertex) at $x=\pi$.
벡터방정식은 $\mathbf r(u,v)=u^2\,\mathbf i+v^2\,\mathbf j+(u+2v)\,\mathbf k$이므로, 접벡터는
법선벡터 $\langle a,b,c\rangle$와 점 $(x_0,y_0,z_0)$을 지나는 평면의 방정식 $a(x-x_0)+b(y-y_0)+c(z-z_0)=0$에 대입하면
A surface $S$ carries the parametric equations $x=u^{2}$, $y=v^{2}$, $z=u+2v$. Determine an equation of the plane tangent to $S$ at the point $(1,1,3)$ of $S$.
Solution. First find the parameter pair $(u,v)$ corresponding to $(1,1,3)$. Since $u^2=1$, $u=\pm1$, and since $v^2=1$, $v=\pm1$; imposing the remaining condition $u+2v=3$ singles out $u=1,v=1$ (the other three combinations give $-1,1,-3$ respectively, none of which match). So the parameters for this point are $(u_0,v_0)=(1,1)$.
The vector equation is $\mathbf r(u,v)=u^2\,\mathbf i+v^2\,\mathbf j+(u+2v)\,\mathbf k$, so the tangent vectors are
By Card 9, $\mathbf r_u\times\mathbf r_v$ is normal to the tangent plane, so compute the cross product:
Substituting $(u,v)=(1,1)$ gives the normal vector
With normal vector $\langle a,b,c\rangle$ and the plane through $(x_0,y_0,z_0)$ given by $a(x-x_0)+b(y-y_0)+c(z-z_0)=0$, substitution gives
Expanding gives $-2x-4y+4z-6=0$, and dividing both sides by $-2$,
Hence the tangent plane has equation $x+2y-2z+3=0$.
예제 4의 매개화 $\mathbf r(\phi,\theta)=a\sin\phi\cos\theta\,\mathbf i+a\sin\phi\sin\theta\,\mathbf j+a\cos\phi\,\mathbf k$, $D=[0,\pi]\times[0,2\pi]$에서 출발한다.

Starting from Definition 6, calculate the area of a sphere whose radius is $a$.
Solution. Start from the parametrization of Example 4, $\mathbf r(\phi,\theta)=a\sin\phi\cos\theta\,\mathbf i+a\sin\phi\sin\theta\,\mathbf j+a\cos\phi\,\mathbf k$, $D=[0,\pi]\times[0,2\pi]$. The tangent vectors are
and their cross product is
The square of its length is
(the second equality uses $\cos^2\theta+\sin^2\theta=1$; the third factors out $\sin^2\phi$ and uses $\sin^2\phi+\cos^2\phi=1$), so, since $\sin\phi\ge0$ on $0\le\phi\le\pi$,
Applying Definition 6,
The integrand does not involve $\theta$, so the outer integral contributes a factor of $2\pi$, and the inner integral is

Hence a sphere of radius $a$ has area $4\pi a^2$, agreeing with the familiar formula.
따라서 구하는 넓이는 $A(S)=\dfrac{\pi}{6}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr)\approx117.319$이다.
The plane $z=9$ cuts the paraboloid $z=x^{2}+y^{2}$. Find the area of the piece of the paraboloid that lies underneath that plane.
Solution. Since $z=x^2+y^2$ is a graph, Equation (9) applies directly. With $\partial z/\partial x=2x$ and $\partial z/\partial y=2y$, the integrand is
First pin down $D$: the plane $z=9$ meets the paraboloid along $x^2+y^2=9$, $z=9$, so the piece of the paraboloid below the plane is exactly the part whose projection is the disk $D=\{(x,y)\mid x^2+y^2\le9\}$ (radius $3$). Hence
Since the integrand depends only on $x^2+y^2$ and $D$ is a disk, switching to polar coordinates $x=r\cos\theta,\ y=r\sin\theta,\ dA=r\,dr\,d\theta$ gives
The integrand does not involve $\theta$, so the outer integral contributes a factor of $2\pi$. For the inner integral, substitute $w=1+4r^2$, so $dw=8r\,dr$, and $r=0,3$ correspond to $w=1,37$:
Multiplying by $2\pi$,
Hence the required area is $A(S)=\dfrac{\pi}{6}\bigl(37\sqrt{37}-1\bigr)\approx117.319$.
