Part 2 of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, met back in Section 4.3, can be recorded as
valid whenever $F'$ is continuous on $[a,b]$. What Equation (1) asserts is a kind of economy: to integrate a derivative over $[a,b]$ one needs no information from the interior of the interval, only the two numbers $F(a)$ and $F(b)$ read off at the endpoints.
For a function $f$ of two or three variables the gradient $\nabla f$ plays the part of a derivative. It is therefore natural to ask whether the line integral of $\nabla f$ along a curve is likewise settled by the endpoints of the curve. This section shows that it is.
앞의 두 식을 이으면 $\displaystyle\int_C\nabla f\cdot d\mathbf r=f(\mathbf r(b))-f(\mathbf r(a))$이다.
Theorem 2. Let $C$ be a smooth curve described by a vector function $\mathbf r(t)$, $a\le t\le b$, and let $f$ be a differentiable function of two or three variables whose gradient vector $\nabla f$ is continuous at every point of $C$. Then
Read the right-hand side carefully: $\mathbf r(a)$ and $\mathbf r(b)$ are the initial and terminal points of $C$, so the whole line integral is decided by the values of $f$ at those two points. The proof below runs the Chain Rule backwards and then applies Equation (1); it is written out for a function of three variables, the two-variable case being identical with one term dropped.
Proof. Write the argument for a function of three variables; the two-variable case is identical with the $z$-term dropped. By the definition of the line integral,
Set $g(t)=f(\mathbf r(t))=f(x(t),y(t),z(t))$. The Chain Rule of Section 14.5 gives
Since $C$ is smooth, $\mathbf r'$ is continuous on $[a,b]$, and $\nabla f$ is continuous on $C$ by hypothesis, so $g'$ is continuous on $[a,b]$. Part 2 of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus — Equation (1) — therefore applies to $g$:
Combining the two displays gives $\displaystyle\int_C\nabla f\cdot d\mathbf r=f(\mathbf r(b))-f(\mathbf r(a))$.
평면 곡선이 $A(x_1,y_1)$에서 $B(x_2,y_2)$까지 이어진다면
공간 곡선이 $A(x_1,y_1,z_1)$에서 $B(x_2,y_2,z_2)$까지 이어진다면
NOTE 1 — the integral is a net change. A conservative field is the gradient field of a potential function $f$, so Theorem 2 evaluates its line integral from the two endpoint values of $f$; equivalently, the integral records the net change in $f$ along $C$. For a plane curve running from $A(x_1,y_1)$ to $B(x_2,y_2)$ this reads
and for a space curve joining $A(x_1,y_1,z_1)$ to $B(x_2,y_2,z_2)$,
NOTE 2 — two curves, one answer. Keep the hypotheses of Theorem 2 and let $C_1$ and $C_2$ be smooth curves with a common initial point and a common terminal point. Both integrals then equal the same difference of endpoint values, so
NOTE 3 — piecewise-smooth curves. Smoothness of $C$ is more than is needed. Split a piecewise-smooth curve into finitely many smooth pieces, apply Theorem 2 to each piece, and add: the interior endpoint values cancel in pairs and the conclusion survives unchanged.
Piecewise-smooth curves sharing an initial point $A$ and a terminal point $B$ are called paths from $A$ to $B$. For a general continuous field the two integrals along two such paths need not agree — Example 16.2.4 exhibits a field for which
whereas NOTE 2 above says the two do agree once $\mathbf F=\nabla f$ with $\nabla f$ continuous.
That contrast deserves a name. Let $\mathbf F$ be a continuous vector field with domain $D$. The line integral $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ is independent of path if any two paths in $D$ that start at the same point and end at the same point assign it the same value. In this vocabulary, NOTE 2 reads: a conservative vector field has line integrals that are independent of path.
One more term. A curve is closed when it returns to where it began, that is, when $\mathbf r(b)=\mathbf r(a)$. Closed paths are the key to the next theorem: cutting a closed path at two of its points always yields two paths, and reversing one of them turns the pair into two paths with a common initial point and a common terminal point.
$C$를 $A$에서 $B$까지 가는 조각 $C_1$과 $B$에서 다시 $A$로 돌아오는 조각 $C_2$로 자르면 $C=C_1\cup C_2$이다.
즉 $\int_{C_2}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=-\int_{C_1}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$이므로
Theorem 3. Let $\mathbf F$ be a continuous vector field with domain $D$. Then $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ is independent of path in $D$ if and only if
for every closed path $C$ lying in $D$.
A single device drives both implications: a closed path, cut at two of its points $A$ and $B$, becomes a path $C_1$ from $A$ to $B$ followed by a path $C_2$ from $B$ to $A$; conversely two paths from $A$ to $B$ become a closed path once the second one is reversed. Reversing a curve reverses the sign of the integral, $\int_{-C}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=-\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$, which is what converts a sum into a difference.
Proof. Both implications are proved.
($\Rightarrow$) Suppose $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ is independent of path in $D$. Let $C$ be an arbitrary closed path in $D$ and pick a point $B$ on $C$ other than the common initial and terminal point $A$. Cutting $C$ at $B$ splits it into a piece $C_1$ from $A$ to $B$ and a piece $C_2$ from $B$ back to $A$, so $C=C_1\cup C_2$. Since $-C_2$ runs from $A$ to $B$ (not from $B$ to $A$), $C_1$ and $-C_2$ share endpoints, and independence of path gives
Thus $\int_{C_2}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=-\int_{C_1}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$, and
($\Leftarrow$) Suppose $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=0$ for every closed path $C$ in $D$. Let $C_1$ and $C_2$ be any two paths in $D$ sharing an initial point $A$ and a terminal point $B$. Traveling $C_1$ from $A$ to $B$ and then $-C_2$ from $B$ back to $A$ produces a closed path $C=C_1\cup(-C_2)$ in $D$, so by hypothesis
Hence $\int_{C_1}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=\int_{C_2}\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$, and since $C_1,C_2$ were arbitrary, $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ is independent of path in $D$.
Chain the two facts together. Line integrals of a conservative field are independent of path, and Theorem 3 turns path independence into vanishing integrals around closed paths. Hence for a conservative $\mathbf F$,
The physical reading is worth remembering. Let a conservative force field — the gravitational field or the electric field of Section 16.1, say — carry an object once around a closed path, so that the object ends where it started. The total work done on it is then $0$.
Open region. A region $D$ is open if every point $P$ of $D$ is the center of at least one disk that lies wholly inside $D$. Equivalently, $D$ owns none of its boundary points.
Connected region. A region $D$ is connected if any two of its points can be joined by a path that never leaves $D$.
Both properties are hypotheses of Theorem 4 below, and each is used for a different purpose: openness supplies room around a point to move along a short horizontal or vertical segment, while connectedness guarantees that some path from the base point to an arbitrary point of $D$ exists at all.
$D$ 안에 기준점 $A(a,b)$를 고정하고
$D$가 연결 영역이므로 임의로 고정한 기준점 $A(a,b)\in D$에서 $D$의 각 점 $(x,y)$까지 $D$ 안을 지나는 경로가 적어도 하나 존재하고, $D$에서 경로 무관성이 가정되어 있으므로
$(x,y)\in D$를 하나 고정하자.
$(x,y)$는 $D$의 임의의 점이었으므로 $D$ 전체에서 $\nabla f=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j=\mathbf F$이고, 따라서 $\mathbf F$는 $D$에서 보존적이다.
Theorem 4. Let $\mathbf F$ be a vector field that is continuous on an open connected region $D$, and suppose $\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ is independent of path in $D$. Then $\mathbf F$ is a conservative vector field on $D$; that is, some function $f$ satisfies $\nabla f=\mathbf F$.
Together with the remark that gradient fields are path independent, Theorem 4 closes a circle: on an open connected region the path-independent continuous fields are precisely the conservative ones. The statement and proof are given for a plane field, and a parallel argument covers space fields.
The proof is constructive. Fix a base point $A(a,b)$ in $D$ and define
which makes sense exactly because the integral does not depend on which path is chosen. Differentiating $f$ then recovers the components of $\mathbf F$.
Proof. Write the argument for a plane field (a space field needs only one more axis-parallel segment and the same reasoning goes through unchanged). Since $D$ is connected, some path inside $D$ joins the fixed base point $A(a,b)\in D$ to each point $(x,y)$ of $D$, and since path integrals are independent of path in $D$,
is a well-defined function whose value does not depend on which path is chosen. It remains to show $\nabla f=\mathbf F$, that is, $f_x=P$ and $f_y=Q$.
Fix $(x,y)\in D$. Because $D$ is open, some disk centered at $(x,y)$ lies entirely in $D$; choose $x_1\lt x$ inside that disk so that the horizontal segment from $(x_1,y)$ to $(x,y)$ stays inside the disk, hence inside $D$. Following any path from $A$ to $(x_1,y)$ with this segment produces a path from $A$ to $(x,y)$, so independence of path gives
The first term on the right depends only on $x_1$ and $y$, not on $x$, so it is constant as far as differentiation with respect to $x$ is concerned. Parametrizing the segment in the second term by $\mathbf r(t)=\langle t,y\rangle$, $x_1\le t\le x$, so that $d\mathbf r=\langle dt,0\rangle$, gives
and since $P$ is continuous, Part 1 of the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus differentiates this in $x$ to give $P(x,y)$. The first term contributes nothing to the $x$-derivative, so
An entirely symmetric argument with a vertical segment in the $y$-direction gives $f_y(x,y)=Q(x,y)$. Since $(x,y)$ was an arbitrary point of $D$, $\nabla f=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j=\mathbf F$ throughout $D$, and $\mathbf F$ is conservative on $D$.
$\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$가 보존적이고 $P$, $Q$가 연속인 1계 편도함수를 갖는다고 하자.
Two practical questions are still unanswered. First, given a field $\mathbf F$, how does one decide whether it is conservative? Second, once $\mathbf F$ is known to be conservative, how does one actually produce a potential function $f$?
Start with the first question. Suppose $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$ is conservative, with $P$ and $Q$ possessing continuous first-order partial derivatives. Then $\mathbf F=\nabla f$ for some $f$, which is to say
Differentiating the first equation with respect to $y$ and the second with respect to $x$ produces the two mixed second-order partial derivatives of $f$, and Clairaut's Theorem says these agree:
That short computation is the whole content of Theorem 5, and it already gives a cheap way to disqualify a field.
$\mathbf F(x,y)=P(x,y)\,\mathbf i+Q(x,y)\,\mathbf j$가 보존적 벡터장이고 그 성분 $P$, $Q$가 정의역 $D$에서 연속인 1계 편도함수를 갖는다고 하자.
Theorem 5. Let $\mathbf F(x,y)=P(x,y)\,\mathbf i+Q(x,y)\,\mathbf j$ be a conservative vector field whose components $P$ and $Q$ have continuous first-order partial derivatives on a domain $D$. Then at every point of $D$,
Used in the contrapositive, this is a rejection test: a field whose two partial derivatives disagree anywhere cannot be conservative, and no search for a potential function is needed. The converse statement is more delicate — matching partial derivatives alone will not do, and a hypothesis on the shape of $D$ has to be added (Theorem 6).
Proof. Since $\mathbf F$ is conservative, some function $f$ satisfies $\nabla f=\mathbf F$; comparing components gives
By hypothesis $P$ and $Q$ have continuous first-order partial derivatives on $D$, so the mixed second-order partial derivatives of $f$,
exist and are continuous on $D$. Clairaut's Theorem (Section 14.3) therefore applies at every point of $D$, and the two mixed partial derivatives agree there:
That is, $\partial P/\partial y=\partial Q/\partial x$ throughout $D$, which is exactly the claim.
닫힌 단순곡선이라면 $\mathbf r(a)=\mathbf r(b)$이지만, $a\lt t_1\lt t_2\lt b$인 임의의 $t_1,t_2$에 대해서는 $\mathbf r(t_1)\neq\mathbf r(t_2)$이다.
Simple curve. A curve is simple if it never meets itself at any parameter value strictly between its endpoints. For a simple closed curve one has $\mathbf r(a)=\mathbf r(b)$, while $\mathbf r(t_1)\neq\mathbf r(t_2)$ whenever $a\lt t_1\lt t_2\lt b$.
Pairing “simple or not” with “closed or not” sorts curves into the four kinds drawn below. The concept is needed because the converse of Theorem 5 will be phrased in terms of the simple closed curves that a region contains.
Simply-connected region. A connected region $D$ in the plane is simply-connected if every simple closed curve drawn inside $D$ encloses only points that themselves belong to $D$.
Informally: no hole is punched in such a region, and it does not fall apart into two separate pieces. In the picture below the region on the left is simply-connected, while the middle region (a hole in it) and the right region (two disjoint pieces) are not. A curve encircling the hole encloses points outside the region, which is exactly what the definition forbids.
Theorem 6. Let $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$ be a vector field defined on an open simply-connected region $D$, and suppose $P$ and $Q$ have continuous first-order partial derivatives with
at every point of $D$. Then $\mathbf F$ is conservative.
This is the partial converse of Theorem 5 announced earlier, and it is the working criterion for a field on $\mathbb R^{2}$: compare the two partial derivatives, then confirm that the domain is open and simply-connected. Both hypotheses matter — dropping simple connectedness makes the conclusion false in general.
Proof: deferred to Section 16.4, where it is sketched once Green's Theorem is available.
Theorem 6 certifies that a potential function exists but hands over no formula for it. The proof of Theorem 4 suggests the route, and in practice one proceeds by partial integration, illustrated in Examples 3 and 5.
Plane fields. Antidifferentiate $f_x=P$ with respect to $x$. Whatever is constant in $x$ may still depend on $y$, so the “constant” of integration is an unknown function $g(y)$:
Now differentiate this expression with respect to $y$, set the outcome equal to $Q$, and the unknown $g'(y)$ is determined; one last antidifferentiation in $y$ produces $g$ up to an additive constant $K$.
Space fields. The same loop simply runs one turn longer. Antidifferentiating $f_x=P$ in $x$ leaves an unknown $g(y,z)$; differentiating in $y$ and matching $Q$ pins down $g_y$, so that $g(y,z)$ is known up to an unknown $h(z)$; differentiating in $z$ and matching $R$ finally pins down $h'(z)$.
연속인 힘장 $\mathbf F$가 $\mathbf r(t)$, $a\le t\le b$로 주어지는 경로 $C$를 따라 물체를 시점 $A=\mathbf r(a)$에서 종점 $B=\mathbf r(b)$까지 옮긴다고 하자.
Let a continuous force field $\mathbf F$ carry an object along a path $C$ given by $\mathbf r(t)$, $a\le t\le b$, from the initial point $A=\mathbf r(a)$ to the terminal point $B=\mathbf r(b)$. Newton's Second Law (Section 13.4) links the force at a point of $C$ to the acceleration $\mathbf a(t)=\mathbf r''(t)$ there:
Feed this into the work integral. Formula 4 of Theorem 13.2.3 identifies $\mathbf r''\cdot\mathbf r'$ as half the derivative of $\lvert\mathbf r'\rvert^{2}$, so
and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus evaluates the right-hand side at the two ends, giving Equation (15):
where $\mathbf v=\mathbf r'$ is the velocity. The quantity $\tfrac12 m\lvert\mathbf v(t)\rvert^{2}$ — the mass of the object multiplied by its speed squared and then halved — is its kinetic energy $K$, so Equation (15) can be restated as Equation (16):
the work of the field along $C$ is the change in kinetic energy between the endpoints.
Assume now in addition that the force field is conservative, $\mathbf F=\nabla f$. Physics calls $P=-f$ the potential energy of the object at a point (in this paragraph the letter $P$ stands for potential energy, not for the first component of $\mathbf F$), so that $\mathbf F=-\nabla P$, and Theorem 2 turns the work into $W=P(A)-P(B)$. Setting this beside Equation (16) leaves
An object moved from $A$ to $B$ by a conservative force field therefore keeps the sum of its potential and kinetic energy constant. This is the Law of Conservation of Energy — and the reason such a field is called conservative in the first place.

A particle of mass $m$ travels from the point $(3,4,12)$ to the point $(2,2,0)$ along a piecewise-smooth curve $C$, inside the gravitational field
Apply the Fundamental Theorem for Line Integrals to determine how much work this field performs on the particle. (Compare Example 16.1.4.)
Solution. Section 16.1 verified that this gravitational field is conservative, with potential function
satisfying $\nabla f=\mathbf F$. Since $f$ is differentiable and $\nabla f$ continuous away from the origin, Theorem 2 applies to the whole curve $C$ as long as the particle never passes through the origin. With initial point $(3,4,12)$ and terminal point $(2,2,0)$,
Computing the two distances to the origin,

The point of Theorem 2 is that the exact shape of $C$ never enters the computation, only its two endpoints. Hence the work done by the gravitational field is $W=\dfrac{mMG(13\sqrt2-4)}{52}$.
(a) $\mathbf F(x,y)=(x-y)\,\mathbf i+(x-2)\,\mathbf j$
(b) $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^{2}-3y^{2})\,\mathbf j$
(a) $P(x,y)=x-y$, $Q(x,y)=x-2$라 하면 두 함수 모두 $\mathbb R^2$ 전체에서 연속인 1계 편도함수를 갖는다.
이므로 $\partial P/\partial y\neq\partial Q/\partial x$이다.
정리 6의 세 가지 가정 — 열린 단순연결 정의역, 연속인 1계 편도함수, 등식 $\partial P/\partial y=\partial Q/\partial x$ — 이 모두 충족되므로 $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^2-3y^2)\,\mathbf j$는 보존적이다.
For each of the two plane vector fields below, decide whether or not it is conservative.
(a) $\mathbf F(x,y)=(x-y)\,\mathbf i+(x-2)\,\mathbf j$
(b) $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^{2}-3y^{2})\,\mathbf j$
(a) With $P(x,y)=x-y$ and $Q(x,y)=x-2$, both functions have continuous first-order partial derivatives on all of $\mathbb R^2$. Differentiating,
so $\partial P/\partial y\neq\partial Q/\partial x$. By the contrapositive of Theorem 5, a single point of disagreement already rules out conservativeness, and no search for a potential function is needed: $\mathbf F(x,y)=(x-y)\,\mathbf i+(x-2)\,\mathbf j$ is not conservative.
(b) With $P(x,y)=3+2xy$ and $Q(x,y)=x^2-3y^2$,
so $\partial P/\partial y=\partial Q/\partial x$ at every point of $\mathbb R^2$. The domain is all of $\mathbb R^2$, which is open and simply-connected, and $P,Q$ are polynomials, hence have continuous first-order partial derivatives. All three hypotheses of Theorem 6 — an open simply-connected domain, continuous first-order partial derivatives, and the equality $\partial P/\partial y=\partial Q/\partial x$ — are satisfied, so $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^2-3y^2)\,\mathbf j$ is conservative.
평면 벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^{2}-3y^{2})\,\mathbf j$에 대하여 $\nabla f=\mathbf F$를 만족하는 함수 $f$를 하나 구하여라.
예제 2(b)에서 $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^2-3y^2)\,\mathbf j$가 보존적임을 확인했으므로, $f_x=P=3+2xy$이고 $f_y=Q=x^2-3y^2$인 $f$가 존재한다.
Given the plane field $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^{2}-3y^{2})\,\mathbf j$, produce a function $f$ that satisfies $\nabla f=\mathbf F$.
Solution. Example 2(b) confirmed that $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^2-3y^2)\,\mathbf j$ is conservative, so some $f$ satisfies $f_x=P=3+2xy$ and $f_y=Q=x^2-3y^2$. Following the partial-integration procedure, antidifferentiate $f_x=P$ with respect to $x$:
where the constant of integration is an unknown function $g(y)$ of $y$ alone. Differentiating this in $y$ gives
and matching this to $Q=x^2-3y^2$ forces $g'(y)=-3y^2$. Antidifferentiating once more in $y$ gives $g(y)=-y^3+K$ for a constant $K$, so
Checking: $f_x=3+2xy=P$ and $f_y=x^2-3y^2=Q$, so both partial derivatives reproduce the components of $\mathbf F$. Taking $K=0$, $f(x,y)=3x+x^2y-y^3$ is a potential function satisfying $\nabla f=\mathbf F$.
벡터장이 $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^{2}-3y^{2})\,\mathbf j$이고 곡선 $C$가
따라서 $\displaystyle\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=e^{3\pi}+1$이다.
Compute the line integral $\displaystyle\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r$ for the field $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^{2}-3y^{2})\,\mathbf j$, where the curve $C$ is traced by
Solution. Example 2(b) established that $\mathbf F(x,y)=(3+2xy)\,\mathbf i+(x^2-3y^2)\,\mathbf j$ is conservative, and Example 3 produced the potential function $f(x,y)=3x+x^2y-y^3$, so Theorem 2 applies directly. The endpoints of the curve are
By Theorem 2,
and substituting each point,
so
The curve $C$ is a spiral whose radius grows like $e^{t}$ as it sweeps half a turn clockwise about the origin, and its parametrization is awkward; Theorem 2 nevertheless needs nothing beyond the two endpoints — no integration over that parametrization is required. A second route confirms this: independence of path lets $C$ be replaced by the vertical segment $C_1$ on the $y$-axis from $(0,1)$ to $(0,-e^\pi)$, namely $\mathbf r(t)=\langle 0,t\rangle$ with $t$ decreasing from $1$ to $-e^\pi$. On this segment $x=0$ and $dx=0$, so $\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=P\,dx+Q\,dy=-3y^2\,dy$, and
which matches the answer from Theorem 2 exactly. Hence $\displaystyle\int_C\mathbf F\cdot d\mathbf r=e^{3\pi}+1$.
공간 벡터장 $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=y^{2}\,\mathbf i+(2xy+e^{3z})\,\mathbf j+3ye^{3z}\,\mathbf k$에 대하여 $\nabla f=\mathbf F$인 함수 $f$를 구하여라.
Find a function $f$ whose gradient is the space field $\mathbf F(x,y,z)=y^{2}\,\mathbf i+(2xy+e^{3z})\,\mathbf j+3ye^{3z}\,\mathbf k$.
Solution. If $\nabla f=\mathbf F$, then $f_x=P=y^2$, $f_y=Q=2xy+e^{3z}$, and $f_z=R=3ye^{3z}$. Following the space-field version of the partial-integration procedure, antidifferentiate $f_x=P$ with respect to $x$:
where the constant of integration is an unknown function $g(y,z)$ not involving $x$. Differentiating this in $y$,
and matching this to $Q=2xy+e^{3z}$ forces $g_y(y,z)=e^{3z}$. Antidifferentiating in $y$ gives $g(y,z)=ye^{3z}+h(z)$, with $h$ an unknown function of $z$ alone, so
Differentiating once more, in $z$,
and matching this to $R=3ye^{3z}$ forces $h'(z)=0$, so $h(z)=K$ for a constant $K$. Checking: $f_x=y^2=P$, $f_y=2xy+e^{3z}=Q$, and $f_z=3ye^{3z}=R$, so all three partial derivatives reproduce the components of $\mathbf F$. Taking $K=0$,
is a potential function satisfying $\nabla f=\mathbf F$.

A warning about notation — the lecture notes label the two components of a plane field with different letters than this section does. Here, as in Section 16.1, the field is written $\mathbf F=P\,\mathbf i+Q\,\mathbf j$, so the test has to be read in the form $\partial P/\partial y=\partial Q/\partial x$. The notes also test conservativeness only through $\nabla\times\mathbf F=\mathbf 0$ in three variables, and never state the two-variable criterion of Theorems 5 and 6 separately.
